It seems pretty likely that institutions that sign on to the new version of the higher education compact will get some preferential treatment for research funding.

Yesterday, @asanews.bsky.social announced that, due to cuts in funding from the National Science Foundation, it will no longer run its Dissertation Research Improvement Grants. The consequences of these funding cuts to science and the future research capacity of the US will be staggering.
Outstanding insight into likely effects of student visa time limits on study and post-study training. Other countries will absorb some, but not all of the talent. The setback to scientific progress will concentrate in the US but will be global in scope and have lasting if not permanent effects.

Yes, higher ed has the steepest percentage decline in trust since 2015. But it started only second to the military in trust back in 2015. Even with this steep decline, in 2026, higher ed has higher trust than most institutions except the military and the police. 3/

Time to revisit @aaup.org's 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure: Tenure benefits universities because it frees teaching and research of political interference and makes "the profession attractive to men and women of ability." It's a recruiting tool not a privilege.
