Lepus

Speed, fright and eyes
Pelt-bundled at birth out of
Earth-shoal cavities -

Gloam-shifted as inkblot
Entities -
We lope and feed under
Disquieted skies.

Ears gold or snow-tipped at
Moonglow and sun-ember,
We are the all-seeing hare
Unseen. They say we

Change sex at will:
Bucks spar on March tufts;
Does hook-jab at ill-timed,
Unwelcome advances. In

Low-curved sable and
Russet shadows, we
Crouch as loam-bound
Moulds.

Vagrants or poachers,
Mistaking us for rock-clods,
Step too close.

We spring at their feet in an
Ambush of clawed herbage:

Instant captured in that
Romanesque apse-frieze where
We bind the miscreant or
Prime them for execution -
Tugging in tandem at their ousted
Numbles.

Carannog in Bronze

From bronze I stand where once my feet knew earth,
I gaze on waves that shaped my wandering days.
Your village hums with engines, light, and mirth,
Where once the oars beat slow through salted haze.
Yet laughter on the shore still finds its ways,
The same bright joy I knew when I walked free,
Though clothed in colours new beside the sea.

I knew the fishermen in wool and prayer,
Their hopes as fragile as the nets they cast.
Now hi-vis jackets blaze against the air,
While engines drive where once tall sailcloth passed.
Yet still the tides return, as in the past.
The sea keeps faith with all who trust its roll;
I keep my watch, content in bronze and soul.

The Prayer of Breathing Before words there was this: the first tide entering the body,
the first assent
we never knew we gave. And after words, after all our names have loosened their hold, there will be this again, one breath leaving quietly,
as if returning
what was only ever lent. Between the two we live: coming, going, held for a while in the mercy
of exchange.
Breath asks nothing of us. It keeps faith through sleep, through griet,
through familiar days. It enters without applause, leaves without complaint, comes back as if forgiveness were the body's
oldest habit. And perhaps this
is prayer

Absence

Plenty of voices in my head
but no one is god.

I pray but no one
makes themself known.

If there is someone
in the absence

it is the absent god.
How can they be absent

when they were never there?
I pray to nothing when grief

hits home. When an ache
for the person I knew persists.

I Was Never Taught To Pray

I grew up believing
in smaller certainties.

May the milkman always be on time,
and the sun be on the garden table
by our lunch,
Dad be home at twenty‑to,
ready for dinner at eight.

That was enough.

I was never taught to pray.

That was enough,
until the vending‑machine walk
past the hospital chapel.
The people inside
clasping faith in their hands.

That was enough,
until your room,
where the silence rang out
louder than the machines,

and the hours
kneeling there

with empty hands.

Face pressed to the floor I pray
For absolution night and day
Begging for a sense of peace
