Had one of the rarest kinds of work days today: we made our day on time, but more importantly, the work was the kind of thing that lightens your heart and reminds you how much good people are doing in the world, no matter how much awful stuff others are doing. Small acts of courage and community.

Experiments with cooling patches: It feels like tiger balm and didn’t stick to my neck initially bc it’s so hot and sweaty. But I’m now definitely feeling *more* comfortable, even if I do feel like I leaned against a blob of Icy Hot. So…meh. They’d prob be great if thrown in the fridge first.

Whereas in Dark Sun, things are already as bad as they are gonna get. Your goal is to survive long enough to fight to fix it. In other words, the goal is to change the setting, which is I think why each time they have reintroduced it they have reset its timeline to the same starting point.
One fundamental difference between Dark Sun and, say, my beloved Forgotten Realms is that in the Realms your goal is often to restore and maintain a status quo. Something bad happens or will happen, you must undo or prevent it.

Removing slavery is easy and not disastrous in any way. Also, it’s good to talk to your fan base and explain the why.
There are a bunch of really interesting conversations in these threads. Like Teos, I love Dark Sun. I think it’s incredibly relevant right now and it is made for some truly beautiful stories about what victory means. I also think there are many, many valid, important concerns about its legacy.

Hadestown has yet again so engulfed my brain that yesterday, I read “Working on a Song,” Anaïs Mitchell’s book about the evolution of writing the lyrics, and it’s a fantastic treatise on writing and poetry and art and drama. Bonus: she sings throughout the audiobook.
Well, all of you who insisted that the Hadestown proshot is miraculous were indeed correct. You all owe me a box of tissues, though. This show always WRECKS me.
Just learned that skunks can spray in either a 30-foot line or a 15-foot-diameter area of effect centered on them, and I don't think I've ever heard of an animal more obviously operating by tabletop RPG rules. (Thanks to @davekellett.bsky.social on @comiclab.bsky.social for the education.)

While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

It’s nice to see everyone’s textual analysis of The Odyssey It’s almost like the humanities give you entertainment, feelings, pleasure, and fun/interesting stuff to talk about, as well as lenses into both past and current society
It is a brief, magical moment where you can do an actual, big-screen double feature of The Odyssey and Hadestown this week. Mythology nerds, film nerds, and Broadway nerds are getting their thematic Barbenheimer moment.
I’m so surprised that no one else had put Sweden in the mix, but they make EPIC horror. My submissions; Sweden Mexico Japan Spain But the great thing about horror is how localized it can be bc it embodies cultural fears, so there’s a ton out there that is new and different and surprising.

I still do not understand why Disney Plus does not have Broadway shows on limited runs on the channel.
Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social · 2w agoNo one is lying about the Hadestown proshot, folks. It is incredible and, yes, quite possibly the best proshot I’ve seen. Do not miss it. It’s only out for a week, and I don’t know that we know yet if and where it will have a life after this.
This is literally the framing plot of Never Let Me Go.
