My view is that this proposal coming out now cannot be considered in a vacuum. It should be considered a tool to subvert peer review of NIH proposals. The statements in the RFI about impact scores are actually correct- they are imperfect measures. But reporting them maintains transparency.

‼️NIH is proposing to change NIH Peer Review outcomes. Instead of impact scores they propose 3 categories: "Most competitive" "Competitive", or "Not discussed" This RFI link will accept your comments/feedback on this proposal until 10/13/26. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Having chaired an NIH review panel, I know how much effort is put into peer review by everyone involved. This piece lays out the current attack on this system amd why it’s bad for American scientific leadership. It’s exceptionally well written and worth the read. It’s also a call to action.

Such a detailed, powerful accounting by @27unihted.bsky.social of how this administration is destroying the U.S. research enterprise: 27unihted.substack.com/p/the-quiet-... #science #resist #censorship #PeerReview #NIH #Action

Shout out to @aaup.org for speaking up against the Trump administration's attack on science. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/24/u... No one claims academia is perfect. *Least of all those working inside it.* But the Trump admin has weaponized its imperfections to justify its destruction.

I’m looking for an automated way to read others’s scientific data without giving credit or acknowledgement, and also claim full credit for insights from it. And I want it to have a fitting name OAI: say no more

A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.
