I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

I want companies to understand that when I see an AI flier, my brain instantly deletes it. I don't think, "Ooh, I should go to this event!" I rush past it like it's a pile of dog poop. Same for ads with AI models. I assume that if your marketing is cheap garbage, so is your product.

I used to have this idea that vacations were the right time to read doorstopper novels, but as I consider the new Mieville and the bag I'm packing for vacation... seems like the last thing, tbh. Is that a sign of my fractured attention span or whatever? I will still read it, just... elsewhen.

Over a month ago, Harper's Bazaar UK published what appears to be a heavily AI story, and at BEST a story that objectively, directly plagiarizes from a bunch of AI slop. There's been no statement, no investigation, no response to multiple requests for information, and the story remains live.

🧵 Ignore the part of this that is a shitty advertisement for Pangram. AI checkers are fallible; there's a ton of astroturfing for Pangram specifically right now. The actual piece here definitely deserves investigation and I'm a little baffled that it didn't raise red flags purely by human eyes.

WRITER FRIENDS: if you distribute books using INGRAM SPARK you *need* to fill out this opt-out form so they don't sell your books to AI corps to rip apart and feed to their machine for training AI.
