I share beautiful words from beautiful books. Mostly poetry. Some prose. Always attributed, always pro-author, and generative AI is theft. (All photos original. All rights reserved by original authors.) Get books here: https://bookshop.org/shop/litbowl

This kind of argument recently got used when people were pissed at that Outlier word game as "you idiots everything is AI-coded now" when the issue was that every piece of text, the entire nature of the game, the "personal" "about us" page, etc. was all slop, not just the code.

"I will not touch anything with ai-generated code" is going to mean, in pretty short order, "I will not touch software" this is just functionally what software development is now and it's only going to accelerate from here

Hey all—a reminder that pushing back against genAI encroachment in your communities (both physical and online) is worthwhile and vital. We read so much awful news on AI all the time that I wanted to share a couple specific positive stories!

1) Councilman Chi Osse's office sends a lovely weekly community update letter to his constituents (of which I am one). It includes, at the bottom, a big list of fliers/events from community orgs. I noticed a couple of months ago a lot of AI slop flyers in there.

I contacted his office. They are very against genAI, but at first there was a resistance to doing anything in terms of time and resources. The conversation evolved positively, though, and ultimately it has now been many newsletters in a row with zero slop.

2) A small press that otherwise has a strong public anti-AI policy was publishing blatant AI marketing photos with fake images of their books/covers in like exotic woodsy settings. They too at first were hesitant ("but I can't possibly make the books look as pretty myself!"). But...

Ultimately, with that conversation drawing the attention of some of the authors involved who were also not happy to see those AI images used to promote their work, the press took down those photos and other past ones, and has for the last couple of months promoted lovely real photos of the books! :)

Very grateful to see these publishers getting named and shamed. If this stuff is going to happen, and we all know it is, I'd rather see it happen with bright shining klieg lights instead of in darkness and secrecy. We should know that it's happening, and act accordingly.

For @wired.com, I spoke with workers about the quiet push to experiment with AI tools from book publishing executives at the Big Five. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

Anyone who sells you a tool that promises to outsource the work of your relationships, or the loving tasks of connecting to our friends and family, is someone who is trying to rob you of your own humanity. For god's sake. Say no to this. Say no to all of it.

"A tear spilled free and dripped down her face. She never cried, never let anyone see her emotions." -- the number of times as an editor I encounter a line like this when it is approximately the tenth time said character has cried in the book is honestly kind of funny.

🧵 Attention, Fellow SFF Artists and Authors -- here is my response to Must Read Magazines, after they presented an Asimov's art contract expecting me to waive all Moral Rights and Copyright to my art. And, I would strongly advise the following to my fellow pros…. 1/

John Picacio’s response to Must Read Magazine’s request for his waiver of all Moral Rights and Copyright of his commissioned art for an ASIMOV’S assignment. Short version — Picacio says a resounding NOPE.
