Home Office genuinely needs to be abolished and its responsibilities split up, with immigration and asylum under an independent authority. What Féile an Phobail row has shown is that women’s rights are at risk — just not from a tiny trans minority Belfast Telegraph27 Jul 2026ALLISON MORRIS I’ve thought long and hard about commenting on the controversy over the cancellation of the Women’s Rights Network (WRN) event at Féile an Phobail — not because I don’t have an opinion, but because it is a debate that attracts the most toxic elements. WRN NI was not a group I was familiar with beforehand, so I did some research. No speakers were listed in the Féile programme for the planned event, which in itself is odd as there are for almost every other of the 90-plus debates and discussions. The group has since announced who its speakers were to be in a series of online posts. My research took me down quite the rabbit hole — a who’s who of the anti-trans movement not just on this island but Europe-wide. I don’t pretend to understand their motivation. In fact, I remain baffled as to why in one of the most dangerous places for women to live in Europe, the group — which has spoken out about femicide before — is obsessing about a small minority instead of the actual dangers we face from domestic violence and femicide. I have worked for decades covering violence against women and girls in all the distressing forms that takes. I know the names of every woman and child murdered in Northern Ireland in the last 10 years without even having to look them up. Not a single one was caused by a trans woman — I checked the list twice just to be sure. None of them were murdered in a public toilet either, which having looked at the online posts of WRN and their many affiliates, is apparently the most dangerous place on earth for women, with trans predators lurking in every cubicle. Apart from the absurdity of much of the group’s argument regarding the perceived dangers of trans women, the claim that women are being silenced by Féile is the most disingenuous of them all.

The media have managed very effectively to sell the narrative that a) unis choose fees, b) they could do it all much cheaper if they wanted to, and c) it's their fault graduates aren't walking into £35k jobs. This is all unmitigated bollocks, but here we are.

i had an enlightening conversation at a party with a university educated acquaintance (in fact a Bristol graduate!) who was seething with hatred towards universities because they sit on huge amounts of money and screw over students. which, hmm, im not sure that’s really what’s happening rn, but also

This story also shows what campaigners and researchers on asylum policy already know: the government puts people seeking asylum in substandard accommodation, gives them rotting food, and then calls them ungrateful (and arrests them) when they take any steps to try to better their circumstances.

Remember that the tuition fee rise just about covers the simultaneous increase in employer national insurance contributions for universities, so cutting teaching grants on this basis means universities on life support being subject to a shake down and being expected to say thanks for the privilege.

This is absolutely one of the weirdest things about living in the UK atm. Wrt state transphobia in particular - there's little popular support for this? IME young people in particular are trans-inclusive by default.
