Of the confirmed VR and compulsory departures so far, I can say that we won’t have specialists in these areas any more: Medieval literature Drama Shakespeare and the Renaissance Victorian literature and culture Modernism Novel writing. Computational linguistics. What could possibly go wrong?

Definitely the case here. In two weeks we find which 9 of 12 in my group will be gone. The other 3 will then have a month to prepare and find hourly-paid replacements for all the classes across two degrees. And supervise 25 PhDs. Plus admin and pastoral care and research. Management doesn’t care.

So a whole lot of my talented Humanities colleagues are now unemployed as of today. A lot of understandable concern over Exeter. But for over two decades my Hums colleagues were in the top quartile for their research contribution to society. History top 10. Now gone with only a national whisper.

Not only that but *the entire Humanities offering at Hertfordshire has gone and is being taught out*

I see some people are reading this post as being about Exeter but it’s referring to the University of Hertfordshire. And that’s Owen’s point. Less coverage about the axe falling there but it’s equally sad.

I am two books in to Robertson Davies’ Deptford Trilogy and WOWEE 🫪🤩 I bloody love it! This will be my reading experience of the year, no doubt! The three novels are interconnected & the first two have explored the same timeline of events from the perspective of different characters. Just superb!

#NCS2026 was epic! ✨ (As was my journey home- two taxis, a train, a coach, a bus & a plane!!). Now to decide where to put all my @hellomizk.bsky.social merch!! We’re very grateful that @guildmedmak.bsky.social had an official presence at the Congress & we look forward to 2028!

I love the little tiny canals or bächle in Freiburg and the way the shops added little ornaments to them! There was v little water to be found on our final day though!! (Poor frog! 🐸)

#NCS2026 The second paired Medievalism session on Wednesday was also fantastic, with papers by @rebeccamenmuir.bsky.social & Anna Wilson, amongst others.

No summer school on book history would be complete without a pigment and illumination workshop from the outstanding @saracharles.bsky.social! The students absolutely LOVED it - look at their beautiful initials!

Today we typeset and printed a sonnet at the Bodleian Bibliographic Press. We were supposted to correct the setting after a first print, but the students became attached to their accidents so we printed lots of (perfectly) faulty ones.
