Job hunting psychologist of monkeys, wolves, dogs and anything interesting and fundable. Incapable of reading anyone's mind including my own. I research animal personality, happiness, and cognition when paid to do so. Views my own unless they're wrong

I spent two years teaching at a gender diverse women's college, which means it allows trans and nonbinary people, and an experimental college before that. I taught plenty of trans students and at the end of the day, they just want to be free to be themselves.

Arizona and Virginia, both of which are governed by Democrats, are ending Medicaid coverage of care for trans youth, Transitics has learned. The bans, which go into effect on October 13th, mark the most significant Democratic capitulation to Trump's anti-trans demands yet. Cowards.

Democrat-led Arizona, Virginia Quietly End Medicaid Coverage of Care for Trans Youth, Acquiescing to Trump Demands

The policy changes, which go into effect on October 13th, see Arizona and Virginia join Kansas as states where Democrats have needlessly opted to restrict Medicaid coverage of gender-affirming care.

As I continue to be unemployed (feel free to send relevant opportunities as all help is greatly appreciated 💜) I've been volunteering once a week at a local animal shelter. I'm getting hands-on experience to better understand both dogs and the realities of animal shelters #Dogs #Shelters 🐶

Here's some of what I've seen so far:
1. Misinformation about dog behavior and welfare is a real challenge, not only with the public but also staff and volunteers. Ideas about dominance and punishment use with dogs are rampant. Behaviors are misread or ignored and a dog can come back from a placement with more problems than they left with.

2. The terminology of expertise is vague. I've added PhD to my name on LinkedIn because as has been pointed out elsewhere and again at the shelter, anyone can call themselves an animal behaviorist and people at many levels do so. This means it can be hard to know what qualifications go with that term, if any. I've also learned that "animal welfare specialist" is increasingly being used for people with no background or specialty in it.

3. Of course, as many can guess/know, it's the most stressful environment most dogs will ever encounter. Staff do everything they can to help but there's only so much they can do and it takes a real eye for behavior and significant experience to feel confident in when to make the call that an animal's welfare is going down with little/no chance of improvement in that environment.

I have so much respect for shelter staff and appreciation for the time they're giving me because I'm learning SO much

The White House’s proposal to penalize nonprofits that help disabled people vote is just part of the Trump administration’s broader attempts to restrict voting access, especially among groups that have historically faced disenfranchisement.

One thing I’ve be disappointed by in science and academia is how many people believe that because someone at the same level is kind of them, they can’t be unkind to students and early career scientists/academics. I’ve seen and experienced plenty of established people punching down, it’s very real

Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

BREAKING: The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to allow essential health care to be withheld from transgender people in federal prisons. Denying medically-necessary care to any incarcerated person is cruel and unusual punishment — period.
