Founded by King Gustav III of Sweden on this day in 1779, Tampere turns 247! Rapids running right through the city centre once powered the mills and factories that earned it the nickname "Manchester of Finland", which is still the best compliment Manchester ever received. Onnea, Tampere! 🧱🌊

Tampere's Tammerkoski rapids at night, with lit-up red-brick factory buildings, a tall illuminated chimney and a blue-lit weir reflected in the dark water under a deep blue sky.

A few things (international) commentatoes should remember. Only 2 million people live in Sachsen-Anhalt. Half of Berlin, a tenth of NRW. Around 400k will vote AfD. Even with this strong result, 80% of people living in S-A will not have voted for the AfD. In a state that is a far-right stronghold.

I delstaten Sachsen-Anhalt väntas partiet få över 40 procent i valet.

Two Finns Party government ministers post a photo on FB: “SEND THEM BACK” caps, captioned “Ratkaisu” — solution. One of them oversees migration policy. Framing people as a “problem” with a “solution” isn’t a joke — it’s a rhetorical structure with an ugly history. #Finland #FinnsParty

Oulussa puukkomies levittää pelkoa maahanmuuttajiin. He ovat kyselleet kaupungilta ohjeita missä voivat liikkua turvallisesti. Jotta tilanne pahenisi sisäisestä turvallisuudesta vastaava ministeri poseeraa väkivaltaan yllyttävä slogan lippiksessä. Tässä on painava syy heittää ministeri pihalle.

A generation after Germany banned a neo-Nazi youth organization, four of its former members now hold influential roles around the politician who could become the country’s first far-right state premier since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949. www.politico.eu/article/form...

Who’s resisting Farage? The “anti-Reform army” is made of two equal camps: young left-wing graduates, and right-wing-on-economics conservatives who fear Reform means chaos not order. Even they agree: women don’t like him. Aditya Chakrabortty in @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Does Nigel Farage know what people really think of him? I do – and he won’t like it | Aditya Chakrabortty

An anti-Farage army of voters is there to be galvanised, as exclusive data shows. But getting them out will be tricky, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty
