On Thursday, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to grant them a stay on the Massachusetts vs Kennedy/ APHA vs NIH ruling. This decision will occur on the shadow docket, with no formal hearing.

The fact that we have to prove a human therapist provides better text-based CBT than ChatGPT is mind blowing. #AI should not be thought of as a replacement for people. #Humanity needs humans and humans need humanity‼️
Nearly 800 NIH grants have been terminated so far, including some focused on HIV and AIDS, trans health, and COVID-19, after researchers were told their work was no longer an agency priority. https://cbsn.ws/3YkDndI

I'm so proud of the work we've done at STAT these past months, and of this 100 days project we released today. I want to talk about two of the profiles I wrote.🧵 I'll start with an amazing researcher @drslaughter99.bsky.social www.statnews.com/2025/04/25/t...

I made a timeline of all the actions in Trump's (almost) first 100 days that have upended science and health. It was staggering to me to see it all in one place, even though I reported on many on these events. www.statnews.com/2025/04/24/t...

American #history may be fraught with injustices, but also with far more brave Americans willing to stand up for #justice each and every time. Preserving our investment in #education is vital for continuing this legacy. 🇺🇸✊🏻 #academicsky #edusky #theresistance
In terminating hundreds of NIH grants, the Trump administration dumped years of investment down the drain. In my latest @opinion.bloomberg.com column, we analyzed the cancelled projects & talked to scientists to understand just how much the public loses out. It's a lot: tinyurl.com/bdey86su
🧵It’s #BlackMaternalHealthWeek -a time to center Black moms & a need for action. I’m reflecting on what this means in a year when our #NIH grant “Looking Back to Look Forward: Social Environment Across the Lifecourse, Epigenetics, & Birth Outcomes in Black Families” was terminated. #MedSky #EpiSky
Last Friday, 1,000 more NIH biomedical research projects were defunded with no notice Here’s a word cloud of canceled grants, based on their titles
my word cloud on these titles (minus Columbia) - any patterns emerge?
🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies
250 people or so at Chuck Schumer's house this morning
You know people are furious when they show up at an 8am protest at @schumer.senate.gov house. Chuck you are betraying us. It’s not too late to change your mind and actually fight back! @indivisible.org @socialists.nyc @riseandresist.bsky.social @marisakabas.bsky.social @50501newyork.bsky.social
Yesterday I wrote about how Trump's "flagged" word list might block all of epidemiology, and some people complained discussing this was a distraction from bigger issues. But I think they're wrong. I think inclusiveness is fundamental to epidemiology, and without it we are dramatically limited.
KEEP CALLING. PEEL OFF ALL DEM SENATORS YOU CAN. ☎️: (202) 224-3121 Tell them to vote NO on Cloture and NO on CR. Vote is pushed to after 1:15ish for now. Situation is fluid. The only public YES votes are Schumer and Fetterman. They need 7-8 total. KEEP CALLING. Call retiring Senators too!
@schumer.senate.gov Why on earth are dems going along with this gop bill to fund the gov???? Y’all need to exercise your spins and vote no. #Liberties are worth fighting for! Trump, Elon and the gop are trampling all of it including the dems.

I am PI on an R01 partnering with the VA. They do enormously important research and have vast data resources. But the VA system is not easy to navigate. Losing their skilled analysts and data techs would greatly impede work there.
NIH cuts are getting the press, but VA research is getting slashed too. What do we lose when VA research goes away? Here's some greatest hits: The nicotine patch, invention of the cardiac pacemaker, first successful liver transplant, development of the CAT/CT scan prospect.org/health/2025-...
PRAMS is the source of data for basically every effort to limit infant mortality and all the health dangers mothers face before and after birth. So a pretty big deal the Elon and Co decided to cancel the program.
