I should add that the Russian Mission Control Center, the TsUP, which monitors the ISS and Soyuz missions, is located in Korolyov. Picture one of the buildings at the Johnson Spaceflight Center in the Clear Lake region in Houston, Texas, getting attacked. That's kind of what happened.

in re Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" (which, in the original Martian Chronicles, occurs on today's date), I didn't realize the very first published version of the story, in Collier's magazine, was set in April 1985. (the current edition of Martian Chronicles now sets it in 2057).

Misses most of the history of US MSR - not doing MSR has been a US space program passtime since the 1960s (first "serious" efforts were in response to Viking in the 1970s). In 2003, MSR actually *ended* (for the Nth time) after the loss of Mars Surveyor '98. US MSR is always ending and starting.
