Adding my own apology to the students of @clarionwest.bsky.social '26 - I'd intended to attend, but I hit a travel snag, and was driving back from a day trip in the Cotswolds when it happened. Hope the day went smoothly, and my huge congratulations to you all.
To the students of @clarionwest.bsky.social 2026, I just realised that I missed your graduation because I thought it was today & not yesterday! I'm so sorry, and just wanted to say that it was such an honour reading & discussing your stories, & getting to know your talented, inspiring selves.

I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...
Another Reason Not to Use “AI” For Your Writing
Back in February I did a long post about “AI” and why I wouldn’t use it for my own writing, and one of the reasons I gave was “the fact that ‘AI’-generated text …

*standing up on the plane* okay so the first thing you need to understand is the Merovingian hates Neo because Neo reminds him of his own failure and refusal to accept the truth of who he is. To cope he had to convince himself that he never had a choice about transitioning, and Neo’s very existence-

I understand that in astronomy there's a saying: "it's never aliens." In linguistics, there could be the saying, "it's never an acronym." (or as one wag once replied to me, INAA.)
‘SOS’ is NOT an acronym for “save our souls.” ‘Golf’ is NOT an acronym for “gentlemen only, ladies forbidden.” ‘Posh’ is NOT an acronym for “port out, starboard home.” ‘News’ is NOT an acronym for “north, east, west, south,’ OR “notable events, weather, sports.”

Well, just wrapped up my week as a @clarionwest.bsky.social '26 instructor. It has been a long, tiring week, but it's also been an inspiring one. Just an incredible cohort of young writers, bursting with talent.
One of the weirdest moments this week: being introduced to someone "Do you know David?" and hearing "Well, by name and reputation." Weird shock of impostor syndrome and small voice inside me going, "No?? But am unknown and unimportant...?"
me, a fool, blinkered: sheldon cooper is a problematic caricature leaning on negatives stereotypes of autism for laughs TBBT producers, sage, enlightened: actually, sheldon cooper isn't autistic; he's just a funny asshole who *coincidentally* ticks every negative stereotype of autism for laughs

The D&D DM segment of my clubs WhatsApp group is blowing up with exactly one of the reasons why I don't run D&D. New set of games. 95% of the players are PHB basic bitch. One guy has gone Shadar Kai Blade Singer Wizard. The relatively new DM is like "is this ok? We said 'official sources only'..."
