Please blow up the public comment (included below): BREAKING NEWS (7/15) — The administration wants to destroy Chaco Canyon without consulting Tribal Nations. It’s an irreplaceable historic & cultural site with 4,700 archeological sites that could be lost to the bulldozers of oil & gas development

i always keep a spreadsheet open. doesn't matter what i'm doing. an easy, infinite two dimensional way to store data. i feel like a cave painter in 30,000 BCE. they'll find my data one day and wonder about all of us. that's why i keep it organized. im making you look good to the future

The GPU is not your enemy. The GPU was intended to channel magic smoke into the drawing of triangles, the virtuous shape. Evil men devised wicked shapes that should never have been drawn, and have used their influence to hoard the GPUs and twist the magic smoke toward the shape of their perversions.

Gmail user, same email since 2005. I tried every new service they had for a decade. Still miss Reader. For the moment I still have Google Fi. I've recently moved everything to Infomaniak. I am in the process of deleting everything Google and will treat them as persona non grata like I do meta.

There’s been a lot of talk of getting off Google in recent years, but now it’s time for people to get serious. This company believes it has people locked in. People need to show Google there are consequences for its actions. disconnect.blog/google-is-it...

And that’s exactly what Google users should do. There’s no denying that some Google services are more difficult to replace than others — trust me, I’ve been working on it — but for most of them, it’s easier than you might expect. Sure, it will take some adjusting and there will be some moving pains, but unless you want to be forced into the Gemini lifestyle, it’s time to make a plan to get off Google and start packing your virtual boxes for greener pastures.

As I mentioned, I’ve been at this for a while — I wrote a whole guide to help people get off US tech. I replaced Gmail with Proton Mail, started using Qwant to replace Search, dropped Chrome for Vivaldi, experimented with Here WeGo to replace Maps, and replaced a bunch more services with alternatives in the Proton suite: Drive, Calendar, Pass, Authenticator, and most recently Meet. In short, deGoogling is possible if you’re willing to put in the work and accept some compromises. I’m not all the way there, but I’ve made a good dent.

“White people can’t handle spicy food” only partially correct. There are two kinds of white people when it comes to spicy food, ones that can’t handle ketchup and ones that put hot sauce called like “insanity joe’s devilfucking sauce” on everything.

Just checked mine. Yep. Also checked student accounts to see what mine are in for. They only get the old $19.99 FOR THE FIRST YEAR. Too bad I teach software and will now show my students how to de-Adobe. Throw your favorite Adobe replacement in the thread here... (also cc: @ernie.tedium.co)

Today’s Executive Order creating a *nationwide* military “quick reaction force” and setting up an online portal to permit random fascist vigilantes to join soldiers is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in U.S. politics in my adult life. Why is it not getting more attention?

The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force established in Executive Order 14252 of March 27, 2025 (Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful), shall establish an online portal for Americans with law enforcement or other relevant backgrounds and experience to apply to join Federal law enforcement entities to support the policy goals described in Executive Order 14333. Each law enforcement agency that is a member of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, as well as other relevant components of the Department of Justice as the Attorney General determines, shall further, subject to the availability of appropriations and applicable law, immediately create and begin training, manning, hiring, and equipping a specialized unit that is dedicated to ensuring public safety and order in the Nation’s capital that can be deployed whenever the circumstances necessitate, and that could be deployed, subject to applicable law, in other cities where public safety and order has been lost.
(
(ii) The Secretary of Defense shall immediately begin ensuring that each State’s Army National Guard and Air National Guard are resourced, trained, organized, and available to assist Federal, State, and local law enforcement in quelling civil disturbances and ensuring the public safety and order whenever the circumstances necessitate, as appropriate under law. In coordination with the respective adjutants general, the Secretary of Defense shall designate an appropriate number of each State’s trained National Guard members to be reasonably available for rapid mobilization for such purposes. In addition, the Secretary of Defense shall ensure the availability of a standing National Guard quick reaction force that shall be resourced, trained, and available for rapid nationwide deployment. Will it change investors' calculus, or stem the tide of mass adoption at work and in schools? I think we need to seize this opportunity to do all that we can to see that it does. This is an emperor has no clothes moment, and a potential point of weakness for the AI oligopoly.

6 days after Soviet troops invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968, a Prague paper published these “10 Commandments”: ‘When a Soviet soldier comes to you, YOU: 1. Don’t know 2. Don’t care 3. Don’t tell 4. Don’t have 5. Don’t know how to 6. Don’t give 7. Can’t do 8. Don’t sell 9. Don’t show 10. Do nothing’

The military takeover of Washington is not a “distraction” from Epstein. It’s a military takeover of Washington, which is an even bigger deal, and those of us who kill brain cells reporting on this stuff knows it’s been an explicit goal since before the election.

The actual physical reality of the planet is that incident solar is abundant. The new technological reality is that we can now harness renewables at scale, opening up ways to limit extraction + pollution. We are not just making shit up to feel good. This is the world we want to build and live in.
