We can't solve a housing crisis without building more housing. Today we broke ground on the Casanova Residence, which will soon be nearly 100 affordable and supportive homes with on-site services for New Yorkers. Every new home is a step toward a City that everyone can afford.

Mayor Mamdani stands at a podium next to Deputy Mayor for Housing Leila Bozorg.A construction worker in a neon green t-shirt and a white hard hat stands at the Casanova groundbreaking.

Quick reminder that airtight, insulated buildings – which are often fitted with filtration systems – offer protection against smoke from forest fires fuelled by the burning of fossil fuels. The old world isn’t coming back. This can be retrofitted together with a heat pump, windows and insulation.

🔥 Big Fires in the US - Pacific NW - sending thick smoke 💨 to #Canada and back down again. BC fires too. Gonna get very smoky in the Midwest and Great Lakes again soon through the weekend! #fire #smoke

I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love. Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below! We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚

A list of the most effective ways an individual can catalyze change at the scale we need to effectively tackle climate change, based on social science.

Any Swedish speakers who can weigh in on the word lagom? Apparently it means “just the right amount” and doesn’t have an English equivalent. Seems like it could be useful instead of abundance or sufficiency.

Air that’s 37.5 °C with 41% RH holds a lot of water. An energy recovery ventilator tempers the outdoor air by transferring heat and humidity from the outdoor air to the exhaust air. Here’s a screenshot from the Zehnder ERV app for the Brooklyn Passive House renovation we designed.

If you’re doing a substantial renovation of a building in New York, the current energy code requires insulation, air barriers, efficient mechanical systems, and good windows. We recommend going beyond the code minimum to a Passive House retrofit for more comfort and lower energy bills.

New York brownstones weren’t designed for this kind of heat. West-facing masonry walls capture afternoon heat and radiate it into the building even after the sun sets. Leaky windows and doors let the air conditioning out. But a restoration to Passive House comfort standards fixes this problem.

Let me appreciate the image a bit: He is taking a set of decomissioned (but not bad!) solar panels + an inverter home on a rented (as far as I can see) cargo bike. I'd tip my hat, if I had one. I used a car to get my solar panels second-hand 🥴
