📢Today Google has added motor fuel prices to the maps app so you can see how expensive driving is. 🚲Not wanting to be left out we have been around the city to check on the cost of fuelling a cycle and produced our own map. 🎉It's good news - fuelling a cycle is still free everywhere.

Wall-to-wall praise for the policy in today’s papers but they either don’t understand it or don’t care. We’ve been here before, of course. Bexit, Boris Johnson, Truss… all bigged up by the media despite, all obviously awful.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

I've been a member of the lobby for well over a decade. Not a single one of my lobby colleagues has said a word about the Conservatives banning me from their conferences, without any explanation. Contrast with the US where even Fox News stood in solidarity when Trump banned news outlets he disliked

The ban comes just weeks after the Conservative leader called Reform's barring of critical journalists from their conference an "authoritarian" attack on the free press

In two minds on this treatment. Certainly makes zebra crossing more distinctive when otherwise hard to distinguish from background. But already kicked up a lot - only been in a day (hopefully just settling in). Also, beacons not working - crossing been there since July. Alt text has location.

Newly laid red treatment of road in front of zebra crossing on Burntwood Lane outside Garratt Green. Belisha beacons not working.

A #WarOnWalking. A war on biking. A war on public transit. A war on any transportation choice other than driving. A war on better cities. But a war on cars? Hardly. Cars still get most of the space, rights, budget, prioritization, etc. And any effort to add more choice is immediately attacked.

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

Background photo from North Macedonia, where “sidewalks are mostly used to park cars” as explained by photo contributor Carl-Henrik Barnekow. Text says “Don’t buy the lie that there’s a war on cars. They’ve been waging a war on walking for a century.” Via the Urban Truth Collective. #WarOnCars #UrbanTruth

You know who else was obsessed with dancing around on the pinheads of imagined classifications based on where great grandparents were born and what they believed? The Nazis.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the most stereotypically Tory conservative man of the 21st Century, responded to Suella Braverman with a long-form video criticizing her position and rejecting a race-based theory of Englishness, and in response has been ratioed by the increasingly feral British online far-right.

While long-term funding is key to the National Cycle Network's success, £104m over four years is £26m a year... the equivalent of upgrading a single A-road junction. CWIS3, the government's four-year strategy mentioned '7,000 additional or improved [NCN] miles by 2030'...so £14,857 per mile?

Things that aren't patriotic: - Racism - Moving abroad for tax purposes Things that are patriotic: - A love and sense of duty to your country, including paying taxes that contribute to it

Summer of terrifying drought and wildfire, bus drivers sweltering in shocking temperatures, everyone losing sleep unable to get cool at night and *this* is the policy they come up with? Just makes things worse and does nothing to address inequality or enable people to walk, cycle or catch a bus. 🤷‍♀️

Petrol and diesel prices are higher than they've been for a long time and people need help now.

I don't like anyone breaking road law or behaving dangerously towards other road users, be they on foot, bike, motorcycle (regardless of energy source) or motor vehicle. They are all individuals though, and if you're painting cyclists as the major risk then you're not serious about road danger
