I teach, research, consult on #diaspora #justice #education #humanrights #migration #Balkans. PhD. Refugee. Vermonter. Transnational Bosnian American.
My co-authored article with Iepke Rijcken and Kyoko Shinozaki, “Embodied experiences in motion: integrating the senses in research and teaching” has just been published in @ersjournal.com as part of the Special Issue: Multisensory Approaches in Migration Studies.
I’m so tired of hearing Rubio & other rightwingers now claiming that if you’re on a green card you’re a ‘guest’ in this country. BS. You’re a lawful permanent resident. The clue is in the name. If someone is a permanent resident in your home, are they the same as the guests who come and go? Come on.
Heute in Belgrad, Serbien. 🇷🇸💪
New from me - is it possible we are actually at peak populism? This post is an exercise in working through a scenario - I may very well be wrong. But also, outside of America, I think something is shifting. Because of America. 1/n benansell.substack.com/p/twilight-o...

As Melania Trump returns to the White House, Slovenes in her homeland brace for another 4 years of being turned into a punchline, their history and heritage often the subject of jokes as Americans struggle to adjust to a very European (& Slavic) First Lady. My story: www.politico.eu/article/mela...

Slovenia has drawn global attention and its fair share of misinterpretation. Now its residents are saying enough is enough.

Was Saša sagt...
The fact that the copy + paste function remains a challenge for some in 2024 is still beyond me.

For women in academia, barriers to having children aren't just finding partners or preserving fertility. It's systemic barriers—relentless relocations, temporary contracts, focus on individual achievement—planning for a family is like an impossible luxury. www.science.org/content/arti...
As women in academia, having children can feel impossible. Talking about it makes us feel less alone
The struggle is “balancing their careers not just with motherhood, but with what comes before: relationships and planning for a family,” these postdocs write

Another data point: those tasked with implementing these ill-thought-out migration policies don't think they're going to work.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in October that EU capitals should consider creating “return hubs” in third countries to speed up ejections of undocumented migrants. Her own migration chief isn’t so sure that will work.
On the other site, I often posted ‘interpretations’ of my name. Below is a picture of what the Swedish mail decided to rename my grandmother upon delivering the present I recently sent her for her 88th birthday. For reference, her name is Izeta Smailagić. 😂😂😂
People are often surprised when I tell them this: both Twitter and Facebook/insta/threads are now specifically engineered to downgrade, hide, suppress real journalism. If this platform is different, that's a huge change
