A Dead, Weird Carnie

Executive dysfunction, a conspicuous lack of marketable skills, and a paradoxical ambition to build a better society from the ground up.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Even if this were viable as a concept (that there's an afterlife; that it allows conversations with others; that enslavers are going the same place as you), who cares? Oh, are you mad at me, Ben Franklin? Tough shit.

the stupidest shit is how we keep repeating the same stupid back and forth whenever progress is made I KNOW lets constantly flip back and forth nationwide on whether weed is safe lets flip back and forth nationwide on abortion how about we conduct 300 studies showing UBI works

Worcester City Council Votes Unanimously to Oppose Massachusetts Ballot Initiative That Would Repeal Recreational Marijuana Sales themarijuanaherald.com/2026/10/worc...

There's a scene in the documentary Room to Move in which the subject celebrates turning down high-paying work because she's chosen to prioritize recovery following an autism diagnosis. I'm thinking about this as I wage an internal war over my desire to back out on a project that pays ZERO dollars.

The very reason why I usually don't wear a helmet is that I feel it sends the wrong message to motorists and policymakers. I know I'm putting myself at greater risk. I'm not naive. But I want people to see that I and other cyclists are vulnerable and to feel personally responsible for our safety.

I am not a BURN IT ALL DOWN person, because revolutions hurt vulnerable people most. But this -- the economy, the government, corporate culture -- is not sustainable. Without a big change to how we work, what we are paid, what things cost, and what the government provides, we're looking at serfdom.

I purchased digital tickets for the first time in a while and what is this shit? At the risk of being an old man yelling at the cloud, I'll note that it wasn't very long ago that I could just download a pdf and open it normally. Now there is literally no option other than to give Google more data.

If there's one thing I find annoying about Bluesky, it's the prevailing impulse to respond to, "Look out for [bad thing]" with, "Oh, so you're saying there's no point in trying to avoid or counteract [bad thing]?? Nice try, doomer. In MY reality, the future is all sunshine and rainbows."

I didn't realize anyone was going to interpret a warning about a 2028 coup attempt as an argument that winning the midterms doesn't matter or would somehow be bad. It's the opposite. Getting some federal institutional power now is a major, crucial step to prepare to counter a 2028 coup attempt.

I don't think it's very helpful to rank these problems as primary and secondary. I think the overarching problem is the feedback loop they create. Social media does create bad incentives in its users, but corporations profit off of them, so they actively push us to keep chasing those incentives.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social · last wk.

This may be unpopular but the companies’ bad incentives are only a secondary problem. The primary problem is the bad incentives social media creates for ALL OF US, which is why even platforms not owned by tech giants become these ideological spaces divorced from truth.

“Why won’t more Americans buy EVs even with high gas prices” idk maybe because policymakers made it unnecessarily difficult and expensive which is irresponsible and embarrassing in two thousand twenty six???
