That huge, powerful body of his performed something more like slow collapsing than anything resembling sitting. A man returning from (music festival) war, Rey thought, and bravely resisted the urge to snicker. Instead, she clambered onto Ben’s lap and arranged herself like his personal throw blanket, his face cupped between her palms. He cocked an eyebrow in response.

“Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.”

“Hmm, but you’re smarter than that, Benjamin. Dam claims you’ve been a little—well, bratty and morose were all used at various points in the conversation. Irascible too. He’ll probably deny it, but I’d bet brunch that he had WordHippo pulled up on his phone.”

The thin line of Ben’s mouth momentarily tilted into something verging on a smile, but her husband was too stubborn to give up that easily, and he settled back against the couch cushions with a scowl.

“He’s a goddamn tattletale.”

The bookshop smelled of mildew, used tea leaves, antique paper and something more fetid, which might have been mouse droppings. More often than not, when a customer managed to push their way through the heavy oak front door and ring the little brass bell above, the first thing they did was wrinkle their nose.

But Benjamin liked it that way. Despite the faded gilt hand-painted sign above the smoky windows (Benjamin Solo - Occult Bookseller), he was not greatly interested in selling his volumes of magical arcana. He didn’t need the money, and he treated most interested buyers who approached the long gloomy register as unexpected bores who were disturbing him from the pages of a half-rotten tome.

Still, he did not appreciate it when books began to go missing. Especially not when he realized there was a pattern to it: that the books disappearing were all from his personal collection of dark magickal volumes that were never meant to be sold to the general public, books that were in fact illegal under international magical law.

Worst yet, Ben was sure he knew who was taking them. The little witch with the freckled nose and fox familiar who had, over the last two months, proved more annoying than any customer in the last decade, accosting him with questions, staring at him with wide hazel eyes until he was forced to lay down his book and tell her, with the tone of teacher admonishing an over-eager child, that the volumes she sought were unavailable for purchase.

back, back again

The sounds of the convent had become soothing.

The trickle of water from the stone fountain at the center of the courtyard. The unrelenting buzz of cicadas as the sun went down. The shuffle of soft-shoed feet along the quadrangle as the sisters paced back and forth to Compline. The smells too, of rosemary, hyssop, thyme, and chamomile in the Mary garden.

When she’d first arrived, Rey had worried the stone walls and silent hours would be too quiet. How would she sleep? It was not what she was used to. There were no raised voices. No gun-shots. No men. No cigarette smoke. No aftershave. No hint of sweat from under a black suit. Not anymore.

Until the night in June when, returning to her small, cloistered cell, Rey found she was not alone.

A strange sound, at once so familiar; the metallic click of a lighter, flicking open in the half-darkness. She had no weapons, nothing to reach for but the wooden rosary beads hanging from her belt. She had traded her weapons for the safety of staying hidden here. But her luck had run out.

“You need to leave,” she told the man-shaped shadow by the window. Even in the low-light she knew the curve of those shoulders. Could almost seem him smile, nonchalant as ever.

“No, sweetheart. You need to leave,” the man said. One long inhale and the tip of the cigarette glowed a deep red. Two fingers, gun-shaped, pointed right at her. “You don’t belong here.”

“Yes, I do.”

She was safe at the convent. Protected in a way she never was in the city, when she was nothing but a pretty piece of meat hung on an old gangster’s arm, all jeweled fingers and slapped cheeks.

“He wants you back,” Kylo Ren tells her.

Snoke’s notorious fixer. A looming presence in a dark suit, the curve of a holster always under his jacket. Never disarmed, even after a few drinks, in his shirt sleeves and playing cards with his boss. She knew. She was the one who cleaned up. But not anymore.

“This is my home now.”

He chuckled, low and mean. “What do you think the nuns would say, if they knew what you were before you came here?”

She pressed her eyes firmly closed. Clutched her rosary until the beads hurt her hands. She wanted to believe he was wrong, that her previous life didn’t matter. That all sins were washed away in the holy water, all trespasses forgiven in the taking of holy orders.

“I know what you really are, little lamb.”

The other gangsters nicknamed him il padre Ren. Father Ren. “The priest”. A joke, maybe, but one with too much truth in it.

Most of Snoke’s men paid little heed to religion. But Kylo Ren wore a gold cross on a thin chain around his neck and kept his hands clean. The rumor was that he whispered a prayer to the Virgin before pulling the trigger. He was a regular at mass, standing a head taller than anyone else as he lined up for communion.

Rey had often wondered what his visits to the confessional were like, and whether the priests could sleep after hearing it. In a world of sin, he walked like a saint. Untroubled. How did it feel, to carry all your mortal crimes so weightlessly?

All Rey had done was been unlucky. A barely-legal streetwalker who flagged down the wrong expensive car on the wrong night.

“Rescued,” was what Snoke called it. (“Look at the treasure I found in the streets. Look at the home I gave her. Look how she hates me for it.”)

Kylo Ren, face impassive as a statue as she perched on Snoke’s knee and imagined different ways to kill him. She would never forget it.

Il padre, sent to collect a lost member of the flock.

He was staying in the town’s only guesthouse. White-washed and blue shuttered, with a view of the ocean. From its walled garden, bougainvillea and jasmine spilled onto the street.

Rey stood outside in the evening shadows. What would the kindly old widow who owned it think, if she knew about the monster inside? Some sins were unforgivable, the priests said. Kylo Ren had seen her suffering and allowed it to continue. Now he thought he could retrieve her like a lost dog.

I know what you really are, little lamb.

That was the thing about Rey. She might wear the habit and kneel in the chapel. She might mouth the liturgy and pray the rosary. But she didn’t have faith. Not in Snoke. Not in Kylo Ren. Not in any man.

And especially not in God.

“I know what you really are, padre,” Rey whispered to herself. “A dead man.”

“Why yes, Poe, I do enjoy doing my job.”

“I know you do, asshole,” Poe hissed. “But you like this job, this case. You like her.”

A shivering prickle of something portentous danced down Ben’s spine. Ludicrous.

“Why wouldn’t I like this job? It’s far more interesting than most of the poorly conceived and poorly executed slop that lands on our plate.”

“I’m sorry; are you complimenting the thief on her competence?”

Poe’s eyebrows were a study in consternation.

“La Renarde started pulling jobs eight months ago, Poe, and she’s already robbed three major museums.” Ben started ticking items off his fingers, one at a time. “She only ever takes a single item, she doesn’t hurt people, and she never leaves evidence.”

Summary:
As professors at rival colleges and practitioners of antithetical branches of magic, Rey Niima and Benjamin Organa loathe each other.
Or so all of Oxford believes. In reality, their new research partnership serves more than one purpose: rediscovering a form of spellcraft once thought lost, reforming opinions on the supposed immorality of blood magic, and paving the way to reveal their relationship without losing friendships, tenure, or grant funding.
But a series of murders on campus reveals a worrying trend: all the victims have a connection to Ben, and the killer is a mage up to no good. The biggest obstacle to going public might just be surviving long enough to do so.
