Uhhhhh this apparently produced a 103 mph wind gust??

Super excited to present my work on vertical supercell mesocyclone alignment this WEDNESDAY at the #AMSMadisonSummit! If you’re attending and want to check it out, this will be part of Session 11A - Supercell Dynamics and Hazards II at 2:45 pm 🌪️ (Previous post said Tuesday)
Through extraordinary efforts, @windbornewx.bsky.social successfully navigated a controllable balloon above powerful Typhoon Dolphin, descended into its eye, then collected multiple vertical profiles as we circled inside its eye. A first of its kind type of hurricane data collection.
Had a nice line of cumulus develop along the surface trough but things weren't quite right, no spoots
Hmmm, sunrise spoots perchance
A confirmed large significant tornado is ongoing on the southwest side of the Appleton, WI area. Huge debris ball and dual-pol tornadic debris signature in NEXRAD radar data. #wiwx
Supercell transitioning to a powerful linear complex near Lisle, NY on 7/18/26. This line produced an EF1 QLCS tornado not too far downstream that was on the ground for ~16 miles.
Shelf cloud and fireworks with a powerful linear complex (7/4/2026). This storm was warned for 80 mph winds and produced widespread wind damage across Long Island. A wind gust of 87 mph was recorded further east.

Lovely return to northeast storm chasing today in southern New Jersey. One of those “go here stupid” setups on the warm front, with convection firing off the Delmarva. I was able to stick with a pretty supercell for about an hour before it got vaporized by the marine layer.
The Enid, OK EF4 tornadic supercell had a ZDR column area of 70 square km (from our algorithm) ~1 km above the 0˚ C level just prior to tornado formation, consistent with the violent tornadoes from our 2021 paper and others we've looked at since (annotated in updated box plots). 🤔
Supercell approaching Lake George yesterday evening (4/16/2026). As the sun dipped below the horizon, a layer of fog developed above the cold lake surface. The storm weakened somewhat on approach, but still had beautiful structure and lightning. Sure didn't feel like April in New York.
Some exposures of a hailstorm approaching State College, PA at ~8pm on 3/22/26 The precip core passed immediately to our north (<1 mile) and could be heard at a distance!
This storm went very tornadic right as it hit the surface warm front where there was substantial shear in the lowest 1km (veering from a SW to SE to E flow). The storm has since crossed into the cold air north of the front. Look at all the ice on the water!
Footage coming out of Union City, Michigan of the violent tornado that just hit the area. The lake seen in this clip is frozen. Footage provided by @WSLPIG on X. #severewx #wxsky
Excited to share my updated results on the vertical alignment of supercell mesocyclones at today’s Stony Brook BRIDGES conference!

we're really just gonna be stuck with this pattern for the next decade huh
Had impressive snowfall rates and wind over the last hour on Long Island. We have unfortunately now switched over to sleet.
Goddamn it was a cold night in Upststate NY. The NYSM Philadelphia site got down to -37.6°F! This is 1.7°F short of the network minimum temperature (39.3°F, also set by PHIL)

First aurora of 2026 didn't quite reach its potential, but still had a fun night out. I also captured two great horned howls on the barn in the foreground. What a hoot.
So far, it has been a pretty snowy winter at KISP. As of 1/2/26, the running total snowfall for this season is 12.9". This is exceeds the seasonal total snowfall from each of the last 3 winters!
