I get where people like Bret are coming from when they talk about the impossible situation it'll be for Democrats to rebuild our empire's strategic capabilities to project power globally without higher taxes. They should just more seriously consider that it is actually impossible and won't happen

Seems to me that focusing just on the margin flattens every relevant power dynamic — as if the candidates had equal resources — and the fact that mainstream political coverage does this should be a clue as to the interests it serves!

if someone had said a year ago "next year a leftist muslim will beat a sitting congressperson backed by her state's sitting governor and 30 million dollars of AIPAC spending—but the race will be close" people would have thought that sounded pretty gd good. gotta keep perspective!
