“Skin” is analogized to milk, marble, cheese, wax, and snow. At SIGGRAPH, skin means white skin. Authors often imply that their models also work on dark skin, but never show it. Post-George Floyd, researchers start grudgingly adding awful-looking Black skin examples to the ends of their papers. 2/

Excited to share news about Monk Skin Tone Scale - Spatial Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (MST-SFDS). 🧵 MST-SFDS anchors each tone of the MST in chromophore-specific spectroscopy — absorption (μ_a) and reduced scattering (μ_s') coefficients at the wavelength bands where melanin and hemoglobin live.

A real honor to have this piece written about my work with the Monk Skin Tone Scale. My hope is that momentum keeps building and we can eventually live in a world where we can expect technology to work for everyone regardless of the color of their skin. current.fas.harvard.edu/stories/live...

Lives saved by sociologist’s fix for skin tone bias

A two-dollar badge is saving lives in hospitals around the world. The product, groundbreaking but simple, is a scale of colors that reflects a more complete range of human skin tones. Developed by Pro...

For the past few years I've worked with the FDA and International Standards Organization (ISO) to re-write guidance for pulse oximetry. We tested 34 pulse oximeters against the new FDA and ISO standards I helped write, which require the Monk Skin Tone Scale. 1/34 devices passed the FDA rules.

Pretty amazing use of the Monk Skin Tone Scale. They replaced a bilirubin detector (expensive) with my scale and a ruler ($9). Over 900 babies screened for jaundice. 0 deaths. Due to enhanced screening using the Bili-ruler, powered by the Monk Skin Tone Scale. www.the-star.co.ke/health/2026-...

Simple Sh1,200 tool turns tide on newborn jaundice deaths

The Bili Ruler is affordable and scalable, making it suitable for use in lower-level facilities

Nothing like some good news amidst all the craziness. The PBS documentary I participated in, Forgotten Hero: Walter White, won a Writer's Guild of America award for the Documentary category. Congrats to Michelle Smawley and her team! www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

It's been an honor to work with Dr. Lipnick & OpenOximetry on skin tone and pulse oximetry. Really great to see this perspective on the new FDA guidance published in @jama.com Using ITA from machines & the Monk Skin Tone Scale will ensure better skin tone representation in pulse oximetry.

Lem warned us decades ago about the deluge of low quality information we'd all find ourselves drowning in. One thing to consider amidst the rise of podcasts, influencers, etc.: Honesty and sincerity are not substitutes for expertise.

Always good to reflect on the unfortunate truth that there all sorts of discoveries we'll never witness due to the finicky and sometimes regressive nature of peer review and hollow demands to do research attractive enough to get grant funding. #NobelPrize #Kariko
