Forests, fire, and what comes after. Working toward a just future for public lands. 𖣂𖠰𖣂 NFFE 2152 VP. Views are mine.
Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the recent wildfires in Washington. America’s unions send our profound thanks to the first responders, including our @nffe.bsky.social and IAFF union siblings, who are working around the clock to keep Washington safe.
Burgum was once so reputable that even REI was like “We look forward to working with the new Secretary of the Interior!” before walking it back like a week later lol The man sold his soul! And for nothing. Enjoy your crumbling legacy
i can understand someone like hegseth, who would never be taken seriously by *any* other admin for even a *low* level DOD job, but, yeah, someone like burgum who was already extremely successful, or RFK, jr. who was relatively popular even amongst hollywood liberals, like, i just don't get it
No injuries or deaths reported though that could change. 700 structures lost in Old Trails fire. 60k people evacuated.
I am here in this thread because we have family in Spokane and are looking for updates on the fire. Thanks everyone for reporting on this.
For interested folks, I created a wildfire experts list from my old starter pack. I also know a lot of new people have joined Bluesky since I last updated it, so let me know if you’re an expert who would like to be added bsky.app/profile/did:...
The devastation is unimaginable. I moved here 3 years ago knowing Spokane would be my home. I can’t explain how horrific this is. “It’s like a war zone,” people told me.
To me this is a marked shift from thoughts and prayers, from we can’t talk about climate during an active event, to people really starting to grapple with the repeating pattern that we all know is completely unsustainable.
Not sure which hurts worse this morning: the fact that 600+ families just lost their home, or the knowledge that this will only keep happening in a warming world.
The front page of this morning’s Spokesman-Review, Aug. 2, 2026, the day after one of the worst wildfires in Washington state history. More than 600 structures, mostly homes, have been lost in the #OldTrailsFire. Read local news.
My thoughts this morning are with the people seeing their home in a pile of ashes, people who don't yet know their home has burned, and the firefighters, wildland & structure, who kept the NW hellscape last night from being so much worse. #HugAFirefighter #IdahoFire #SpokaneFire #Weiser #BigRock
I was expecting a high number. I wasn't expecting it to be that high.
Wildfire destroys 640 structures
The Old Trails wildfire destroyed 640 structures Saturday, according to Cody Rohrbach, fire chief of Spokane District 3.

I have several good friends in Spokane that I'm worried about tonight. This sucks so much.
Considering Burgum sold his soul for literally nothing in return, it’s more than fitting for this administration to throw him under the bus.

Trump officials say they found 250,000 noncitizens on voter rolls in just four states. Those states don't know where the numbers came from, and some worry what the claims may portend for the midterms.
Hey Redding folks! Come join your fellow BLM/USFS unionists for some solidarity and tacos next Friday. ✊🌮
This is one of my big disaster research pet peeves! An alarming number of people seem to interpret disasters being a social construct to mean they’re not “real”… ???
there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5
$11 billion. We paid *$11 billion* for people not to work for 6+ months, and now we are paying untold more to hire them back because oops! Turns out federal employees are actually important for a functioning society!

Part of this issue to me is the financial cost, but the other part is the ineffective and really incompetent management," said Doug Pasternak.

“That's why I'm calling on the Department of the Interior to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into what happened, including whether the administration's recent shifts to the Wildland Fire Service played any role in this event,” Hickenlooper said.

Seriously. Who loses if Oregon or Washington hesitates about spending money on fires burning east of the Cascades? Not a bunch of woke Portlandia types. State of Jefferson takes the hit. And those are also the places that will struggle the most with recovery.
And the irony is these grant denials hit the reddest parts of blue states. The people in Portland won’t suffer as much as the people in John Day, OR will.
Denying FMAGs (FEMA fire management grants) is a big deal. Especially for the kind of fire outbreak that OR has gone through the past few weeks. A troubling development and hopefully not a trend as we hit the heart of fire season.
We went to a national PL5 this morning. “National resources are heavily committed, and additional measures are taken to support geographic areas. Active geographic areas must take emergency measures to sustain incident operations. Inactive/low activity geographic areas are reaching drawdown levels.”

When journalists asked me "where we will see the effects of DOGE on outcomes?" one of my responses was "during crises...as long as media connect the dots." Well, dots connected: www.wired.com/story/cdc-cy...
The CDC Has a Cyclospora Lab. DOGE Downsized It Last Year
“Based on simple math, these outbreak responses—which require rapid, timely responses—are going to be greatly diminished,” the former CDC lab director tells WIRED.

Just watched a bit of the hearing where SC justices asked for more funding because of the threats they get. Meanwhile, if you're a regular fed employee working for the Forest Service or BLM or many other agencies, threats and confrontations are constant & you have to beg for basic safety measures.
Public lands are one of the last great equalizers we have left in our country. I refuse to stand by while these puppet politicians gut our public lands and try to privatize them just to make another buck for their rich donors.
i’m sorry but this is an insane take and the original Mother Jones article was also loaded with misinformation

I was asked to provide weather support to NPS in DC and Mt. Rushmore and and am soooo glad I was already committed to working at NIFC and my day job. Timed out at the max 21 consecutive days just in time.
I would pity them for how small and sad their world is, were it not for the damage they have done, both to the US and the world. Their damage will kill millions of people. I cannot forgive or absolve them for that. I only wish that they could gain the clarity to see themselves as they truly are.
We are all a little naive with our ideals, but DOGE had no ideals. It had no vision of a better world. It just had an endless conviction that nobody is really virtuous, that government is a racket and that fraud and waste are rampant, with everybody looking the other way. Pure edgelord cynicism.
