Very happy to share a new paper, out in Developmental Psychology, that explores why math and science course support isn’t always enough to help with career plan development. We find that course and career motivation develop distinctly during college and each relate to different outcomes:

A survey of 2600 Ph.D. students, postdocs, and other researchers in 65 countries found that top three complaints were that supervisors: 1) used dismissive communication 2) provided little feedback 3) ignored team members’ well-being The main thing they wanted was empathy
Early-career researchers want empathy from their supervisors

If Bad Bunny can cover the history of Puerto Rico, colonialism, transatlantic slavery, hemispheric consciousness, as well as contemporary life and politics in under 14 minutes, you can do your 15- or 20-minute conference presentation with time to spare.
The supplementary info has tons more information about each reviewed study and their measures. We also zoom in on the size of gender gaps by grade level, STEM field, and racial/ethnic groups in the mega-analysis. We hope this is helpful for future research in this area! (7/N)
Loved being part of this project led by @yekim.bsky.social - anyone interested in motivational regulation should check it out!

How do students regulate their motivation across time? 🤔 We followed students week by week to examine planned motivational regulation strategies and which ones matter for achievement. We also show how these strategies are interconnected, with some acting as catalysts for others over time.
Loved working on this paper with @pnbeymer.bsky.social and Katie Muenks! very cool examination of coursework both in physics and in other courses shaping weekly motivation.
🚨New paper alert! We found that major assignments, both in physics and other courses, shape week-to-week motivation in physics. Coursework matters across contexts and motivation is responsive to students' multiple achievement demands. @emilyqr.bsky.social www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Theory-building in ed psych is messy, collaborative, & needs boldness + humility. With @krisarob.bsky.social, we show how real-world problems spark theories, why supporting deep, creative thinking matters, and why we need to support early career theorists. #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky

To solve this problem, there are things individual students need to do & there are things higher education & society need to do. The latter two need to decrease the pressures placed on students' time, increase the value & meaning of what they teach, & emphasize long-term learning not punishments.

I really like this study of the reasons college students move from one STEM major to another, particularly its focus on both the attractive aspects of the new major AND their disenchantments with their old major. Both parts are important. #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky doi.org/10.1037/edu0...

Are you a teacher looking to motivate your students? Students tend to be more motivated when they believe their teacher sees their potential—in other words, when they believe their teacher has a growth mindset about student ability.
This is an awesome group of scholars, and these events are how I meant a lot of amazing colleagues and mentors as a student! I couldn’t recommend them more highly.
Next, we’ve got the Karabenick Conversations, a chance to grab coffee with some prolific motivation scholars. Have your questions answered, chat about your research, or just vibe with others who share your passion.
