“In the past, screenings were performed by a committee of staff appointed by the Warden at each facility. Now, it seems the state wants to outsource that decision—or at least have it be heavily informed by—a non-profit #tech company called #Recidiviz.” #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #CriminalJustice

“Recidiviz began as a data organization project at Google, meant to ‘uncover how technology could standardize criminal justice data and improve the system nationwide.’”

“But what goes largely unseen is the human labor — often people working for low wages in the Global South — that makes this careful algorithmic lifestyle curation possible.” “…the essence of #AI colonialism — the extraction of difficult, low-paid labor from the Global South for profit in the West.”

“Books & expertise were scarce, communication was slow, access to information was expensive. Schools, universities & libraries emerged partly in response – gathering knowledge, curating it, preserving it, passing it on. But we never stopped to ask, what exactly was scarce, & who had made it so?” #AI

A million AI-generated novels don’t create a million readers. Veli Hillman and Peter Kirchschläger on why we’ve entered an Age of Hypertrophy — and why abundance can be its own undoing.

When a chatbot uses anthropomorphic companion language like "I'm worried about you" or "You are great, dear", people actually see it as less likable, humanlike, and trustworthy, according to our new simulation study @GoogleResearch with people from the US, UK, India, and Nigeria.

Vertical bar charts comparing companionship-behavior effect estimates for likability, humanlikeness, affective trust, and cognitive trust in Studies 1 and 2. Each estimate is negative (i.e., below the horizontal zero line), and each outcome has a significant negative estimate in at least one study.

I write the kind of romance I want to read: explicit, grown & sexy, a little funny, with a plot that moves and a story line that sizzles as much as the sexy times. I love characters who feel like real people navigating real stakes. authordlwhite.substack.com/p/the-people... #BlackBookSky
