Virginian turned Washingtonian turned Californian come full circle to Virginian again. Getting reacquainted with southern accents and being called ma'am a lot.

Whether it’s Pete Hegseth overseeing missile depletion, food shortages, and sailor suicide attempts or Lloyd Austin being Black, both secretaries of defense have angered portions of the electorate.

This is such a great encapsulation of why I get so pissed off at the reactionary centrist pundit class. The whole "both sides" framing doesn't hold up, like, at all.

Normally I just appreciatively read @jamellebouie.net 's columns-sharable video content just isn't my bag. But this is a very, very, very trenchant piece of commentary that captures a lot of how I increasingly understand the disjunction between the commentary environment and on-the-ground politics.

You cannot tell if someone has an ED just from looking at them, and moreover, the vast majority of people with EDs are not medically underweight. Plus, a lot of this viral “concern” is indistinguishable from pro-ED content that your algorithm will feed you if you begin interacting with it.

There’s an interesting thing happening on social media right now where people are insisting that to combat eating disorders we need to post and obsess over images showing how thin celebrity women are. That’s not helpful, it’s actually harmful, and I wrote about it. www.wired.com/story/theres...

There’s No Good Way to Talk About Celebrities and Eating Disorders

Online speculation over the weight loss of celebrities like Ariana Grande—even out of genuine concern—can make things worse for people struggling with eating disorders.

Cville folks: Bypass wetbound has a tree completely blocking the road just past Barracks. Eastbound has one lane open. At least one vehicle hit (that driver appears uninjured, not sure if there are others as my view is blocked by EMS vehicles). 1/2

A blue car with its windshield completely crushed.

Actually did the thing via mail in ballot a couple weeks ago, but there's no sticker for that. (Today's red tee notwithstanding, I voted in the 🫏 primary, not the 🐘 primary).

A middle aged white woman with graying blonde hair and glasses wears an "I voted today" sticker on her shirt.

It is absolutely not normal even to imply that a paid consultant from a presidential campaign more than three decades ago is an important voice, and the second they stop being treated as such they *run* to Fox News to become the professional Democrats Compainer.

I have no patience for the argument that anti-trans bigots care about protecting women and girls and women’s and girls’ sports. The conservative agenda is to destroy our autonomy and our equal opportunities. This is not a secret. It is the entire point.

Just asked my partner if we should make plans to see The Odyssey. He gives me a blank look. Somehow, a human being who spends a fair amount of time on AI Gore's Internet, managed to miss every single bit of the discourse, the dialogue, the hype, the everything about this film. 🤯

The claim “RFK Jr. does not fuck chickens” is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that RFK Jr. fucks chickens.

I have what I call the "mid-Atlantic non accent." My Seattle friends said "I don't know where you're from, just that it's not here." But by the end of every conversation with a grandparent you'd think I was a blue collar native of SE CT, or fixin' to make some red eye gravy in rural East TN.

People are making fun of AOC for having a slight southern accent while speaking in Memphis but they clearly don’t know the pain of habitually and unconsciously imitating the speaking style of the people around you
