Well, since he is not here, I absolutely must quote Stonekettle: Irony jumps the track, careens wildly down the embankment, smashes through a circus, bulldozes a mink farm, and plows into the river, where it bursts into flame,…

A mutation in a strain of measles allowed it to go undetected by common targeted sequencing surveillance 🧬. The assay has now been updated to detect the mutant 🖥️. Targeted sequencing is incredibly sensitive but it must be supported by genomic surveillance to keep the targets up to date 🧪🦠

On a private call, Todd Blanche said his goal was to make the "Dobbs decision permanent in every single state." This isn’t just a confirmation vote anymore—it’s a roll-call vote on which Senators endorse BANNING abortion in ALL 50 states. I’m voting NO.

Al-Sayed won with a plurality, not a majority, and Stevens was only a point behind. Thinking your spiking-the-football attacks on Stevens that alienate her supporters are more important than Al-Sayed and Stevens bringing everyone together for a win in the general is really cranked. Put it to bed.

My mom would have had to update her voter registration and prove her citizenship 8 times under the SAVE Act, counting all her moves and name changes. That's just one tiny part of Trump's project to make govt exhausting, punitive and (for him) profitable. My latest www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-is-m...

today's centrist shitlib take: I totally get people having really strong feelings in the primary and I will not criticize anyone who says "If that person gets the nom, I'm not voting in November." But in November, anyone who doesn't vote for the non-fascist against the fascist? Fuck you.

Bird flu decimated South America's marine mammals. What can Australia do differently?

Australia is now confronting an outbreak of a deadly bird flu strain. As of Monday, the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus had been detected in 78 wild birds across mainland Australia. Until now, there had been no evidence of a large-scale outbreak. But authorities have confirmed the first instance of mass death caused by H5N1 among dozens of greater crested terns off South Australia’s south-east coast. They are also conducting further testing on a cluster of sick and dead terns in south-west Victoria. As H5N1 spreads across the country, researchers, wildlife managers and the broader public are increasingly concerned about the risks it may pose beyond birds. Recent outbreaks have threatened aquatic mammals, including southern otters, dolphins and porpoises. H5N1 has also decimated pinniped populations around the globe, including in South America. Pinnipeds are marine mammals that live in the sea and form colonies but spend extended periods on land, such as sea lions, fur seals and elephant seals. As the risk of a broader outbreak rises, Australia must protect its wildlife by drawing on lessons from other continents already battling bird flu. Looking to South America H5N1 poses an urgent threat to wildlife worldwide. Since 2021, this fatal strain of...
