As the Chairman of David Austin Roses he turned the nursery started by his father, the late David C H Austin into a globally respected company. Our condolences to David’s family.🌱

He didn’t end it. I’m not knocking the ambition - it was a huge, huge issue at the time, but unfortunately it still is. Numbers in GM are higher than they were in 2016, when he ran for mayor, and getting on for where they were when he was elected

This week in 1872 the River Medlock flooded in Manchester. The force of the water broke a cemetery wall at Philips Park, unearthing coffins. ‘The result was indescribably distressing and ghastly.’ The coffins were smashed to pieces and 70+ corpses were released into the river.
On holiday in Pembrokeshire and in Pelcomb, close to where I am staying, is this small memorial stone. Pte Thomas Collins, 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot enlisted in 1877 at age 16 (claiming to be 22). He is thought to be the youngest defender of Rorke’s Drift at age 17. (Apols for photo quality)
