Starting this afternoon through the weekend I am going into self exile - I mean _a solo writing retreat_ - to finish this damn book or at least get my deep focus back. I feel like a coked up raccoon lately, my attention grabbed by every shifting shadow. I haven’t managed 40 min of focus in months.
In my current project I am trying to be more mindful about adding breaks in tension — plotting small respites between high stakes moments. It’s very challenging for me because I usually rely on runaway momentum to barrel into the climax. Adding this (brief) lull before the action is kicking my ass.
Generative AI boosters have the same energy as creepy boundary-testing teenage boys. “Everyone is doing it. You have to do it sooner or later. Don’t you want to be cool?” Pestering and negging as promotion and advocacy.
Professional writer organizations should not send out pro-AI propaganda in the form of tantrum-having "essays" to their members, and I don't think that's controversial.

One of my favorite things about this field is how much information gets shared. Once social media took off, authors were comparing writing practices, sharing tips, talking about contracts. I got pointed to Duotrope and Writer Beware. So many writers want to help each other. It's awesome.

There is no industry or craft in the world which is so comprehensively written about, studied, and discussed as fiction writing, and every author I know welcomes new writers who are serious about giving it a go.
One of the most exhausting things is being intensely and overwhelmingly busy, tremendously stressed and under pressure but being expected to look and give off the vibes of someone that is just chill and present and happy to see you. Please let me be serious and work without having to smile for you.
Sometimes people are very difficult and there is tremendous appeal in disappearing like a forgotten folk tale

It’s funny seeing people share WorldCon schedules because it seems like you can clearly see how far along in your career/popular you are based on panel quantity. I am on 3. There are people sharing lists into the double digits. Being a more established author sounds tremendously exhausting.
Look, if you want to get the whole set you have to get some of the less popular schedule graphics, okay?

WorldCon time is nigh! NIGH!!! My schedule is already filling up and I am feeling the familiar stress/worry about not seeing everyone and doing everything. That feeling is the devil and I will endeavor to exorcise it over the next month.

My father died when I was an infant and was not talked about much. My (distant-ish) aunt just copied and sent pages from his high school yearbook to me. Chris Grove was “Friendly, likable, industrious… likes dogs, cat, mushrooms, reindeer, and small white birds.” More than I ever knew before.
