Academic copyeditor, line editor, and indexer in the arts and humanities. She/her/Dr. It's pronounced "mar."

I had a pretty lively career as a music journalist in the 90s and became a political writer almost by accident. I've often wondered what would have happened if I'd stayed in that lane and now I know I'd be in the exact same position I am today.

“Music publications BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Revolver, and Goldmine have been gutted by parent company Veeps... Nearly all the staff at each publication appear to have been laid off yesterday. Veeps, which is now owned by Live Nation, acquired the publications in 2024 or 2025”

The "Performing their 2026 program [show title], Drum Corps International is proud to present [corps name]" misplaced modifier bugs me, but I don't know what I would do to fix it. The corps name has to go at the end! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary

El Sayed: "When it comes to trans rights, this is the right to get the health care that you need...It’s the right not to be discriminated against by your government because of who you are. Because what tends to happen is they come for theirs, then they come for yours"

The idea that we can assent to the taking away of anybody’s rights, and think that somehow the government won’t come for all of our rights, is itself the problem. And, look, I don’t need people to understand how they use their rights. I just need people to agree that the government shouldn’t be able to take any of our rights. I put my face on the ground thirty-four times a day, David. Most people don’t understand why I do it. I don’t need them to understand. I just want to have the right to do it. And when people decide that they want to take away my right to do that, I’ve got a problem. Now, I hope that everybody’s going to show up and say, No, no, no. You can’t stop that person or that community from reflecting and praying as they choose. Similarly, when it comes to trans rights, this is the right to get the health care that you need. That’s really what it comes down to. It’s the right to be who you are. It’s the right not to be discriminated against by your government because of who you are. Because what tends to happen is they come for theirs, then they come for yours, then they come for theirs. And at some point you live in a society where rights are negotiable, and that is not the America I was born in. It’s not the America I know and love. It’s not the America I’m going to allow somebody like Donald Trump to give us.

AVCX crosswords *do not* treat the letter N as equivalent to Ñ (bc they are different). If you’ve got NIÑO going across, it can’t be PIANO down, it has to be ARAÑA etc. And if you have ANO in the grid, it’s getting clued as “Acapulco Anus,” not “Spanish year.” Need to put this in our spec sheet

I have a little soft spot in my heart for this genre, like I know everything from the Obama era is Cringe, but I was a deeply uncool twentysomething, of course I was listening to Mumford & Sons on my iPod, you can't expect me to have been above that

Citation-as-conversation vs. citation-as-showing-your-work is one of those huge mindset shifts that separates mid-career and senior scholars from junior scholars. It’s also one of the best places to start when converting a dissertation chapter to an article for the first time.

One drum I will bang until the end of time is that we need to shift our thinking around citations. They're not a task that we do lest we're punished; they're a form of conversation and thinking-in-public that are foundational to what we do as scholars.

While yall are yelling “go Christopher Nolan” or “go Emily Wilson” I’m yelling “go London review of books and the profitability of art criticism outlets”

men only want one thing, and it's a world where time drifts slowly and music carries you away. to be set adrift by the timeless pleasures of tubular bells. to order Pure Moods, call the number on your screen, or send check or money order for the amount shown, plus shipping and handling.

A mom behind me at Phantom of the Opera was trying to explain what the Phantom would have been teaching Christine in singing lessons but clearly didn’t actually know what singing lessons entail so her explanation was “when to crescendo, when to decrescendo, you know, stuff like that”
