You cannot win on social media. Someone is going to dogpile you no matter what. You are going to get hate no matter what. That's unfortunately what happens. But if I'm going to get hate, I would rather get it for standing for something I believe in like the importance of civil rights.

Negging dudes about their masculinity has existed forever (see: Charles Atlas ads in comic books) although this new level of institutional negging is a lot. I'm glad when I was younger I was mostly resistant to it, a side effect of an enormous ego, ambition, and a "fuck you, watch me" attitude.

Any man who goes online today is apt to come across content telling him that he will never find a partner who will earn him the respect of other men if he lacks money and connections, if he is not bodybuilder-fit with a full head of hair, if he is not more than six feet tall. Online influencers who push this narrative have products to sell. They want you to buy their workout apps, their advice sessions, their investment plans. That’s just how a lot of advertising works: It makes you insecure so you’ll pay for a product in hopes of temporarily silencing your gnawing sense of inadequacy.

Last year I was having dinner with my awesome colleagues who were going to edit the My Little Pony comics and I said “Oh, you know who loves My Little Pony? @seananmcguire.bsky.social.” I didn’t really expect anything to come of it. Then this spring, I found out Seanan was WRITING MY LITTLE PONY.

So we announced this at SDCC, but I didn't make a huge fuss, because I was at SDCC and I don't have Bluesky on my phone. But. Starting this November, I will be writing the My Little Pony comic, with art by @amymebberson.bsky.social, colors by Joana LaFuente and letters by @longtalljodie.com.
