I agree strongly with this -- in that difficult moment, the possibility of collective effort was conceivable. Not everybody felt it, but many did. I think the political class did not like this one bit.

This is important. A lot of city/state emergency preparedness planning assumes there will be federal assistance. We should all get into the habit of just jumping in and do a thing we see needs done, because the government isn’t gonna save us but strengthening that muscle might.

My kid’s summer camp disability aide called in sick a few weeks ago and I found out the next day it was because she was fucking STARVING and her stomach hurt too much for her to work. So I had to buy her a bag of groceries for her to keep working so my kid could stay at camp.
