My politics have changed a lot over my adult life, so I'm generally not overly confident in my political opinions. I'm likely still naive and wrong about a lot of things! But I've never wavered on this. I know to the depths of my soul that I'm right. The death penalty is a stain on our society.
End the death penalty. End it now. There is no reason for it, never.

Being a cyclist has really shifted my mindset about speed when I'm driving. Cycling, I often see the same cars at several lights in a row, so I know cars are going through the city about as fast as a bicycle. When I'm driving, I relax bc I know I'm getting through the city at 10-15 mph regardless.
Every day someone passes me on the left (I'll note, well within the required-by-law 3 ft) in order to stop at a red light where I pass them, and then they pass me on the left again
Low-stakes spousal disagreement: we have some lights/ceiling fans that can be turned on and off using either switches on the wall (separate switches for light and fan) or pull chains. Does it make more sense to use the switches or the pull chains?

Resolving ambiguity in order of operations is easy: simply enumerate all possible parsings of a given expression, compute each value, and then average. E.g., for 9-3-3÷3, ((9−3)−3)÷3 = 1 (9−(3−3))÷3 = 3 (9−3)−(3÷3) = 5 9−(3−(3÷3)) = 7 9−((3−3)÷3) = 9 so 9-3-3÷3 = (1+3+5+7+9)/5 = 5. Voilà! 🧮
I have a rental car right now and I'm not connecting it to my phone. I got an alert sound and popup from the car while I was driving saying I needed to do something to connect my phone. Please, just leave me alone, I'm driving!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I find it pretty depressing that we just totally gave up on even pretending to care about distracted driving. There should not be pop-up text notifications in your car! 🙃

As we mentioned in our episode with @ianloader.bsky.social, just the fact that Apple CarPlay shows your text messages with the little red number circle practically instructing your brain to tap on it should be regulated out of existence. podcasts.apple.com/lu/podcast/r...

It's so funny to me that I worry about using acrylic paints in my paintings, and there's a petrochemical giant that's like "tell you what, lets dump our whole inventory into a river"
ICYMI: plastics giant Dow Chemical, not content with the quantity of microplastics in the air, water and soil, wants to make it legal to dump plastic nurdles directly into water sources in the US.
Degenerate neckpinch: technical term in mathematics or devastatingly accurate insult for Tuvok? (This skeet brought to you by Simon Brendle’s lovely talk about Ricci flow at #ICM2026)

It’s cheesy, but I feel really proud and happy that there are 18 more books in my local library (where I’ve lived for less than a year!) because I asked for them. The authors got sales, I got to read them, and now other members of my community can stumble on them on the shelves!
If you want to read a book and your library doesn’t have it, it is truly a massive favor to an author to request that the library acquire it. It really and truly is
How do you make these your spelling bee letters and not accept caryatid???
The Berenstains, Ann M. Martin (Babysitter's Club) and Gertrude Chandler Warner (Boxcar Children) might be the only ones. I loved Oz, but Baum only wrote 14 Oz books. I loved Cam Jansen, but it looks like the 20th book wasn't published until 1999, and I was past the target age by then.
alright, authors you've read at least *20* books by, living or dead Patrick O'Brian Dan Abnett Isaac Asimov Michael Moorcock Ursula K. Le Guin

The axioms of Euclidean geometry are such a disgusting butchering of the Nicene Creed
Vance: People hang out those hideous signs in their yard that say, "in this house we believe blah blah blah blah blah. You know, love is love, science is science, whatever. No person is illegal." That sign is such a disgusting butchering of the Nicene Creed

I keep coming back to this violation. My work was used, without my permission or any compensation, to train these models. I know a lot of people who have been using these things more, and say they the quality is much improved now, but it's still built on theft of my (and many others') work.

A vaccine against cancer still sounds so futuristic to me. It happened when I was already an adult! Now in places where the vaccine is available and encouraged, almost no one will have to suffer and possibly die of this cancer! Isn't it amazing what we can do??

I remember a friend's stepdad complaining that his bank had a "press 2 for Spanish" option on its customer service line. I don't know what to tell you, dude, you live in Texas, there are lots of Spanish speakers, this company chooses to provide a service their potential customers will want?
I love how one of the factors is "rising consumer demand." How dare businesses respond to consumer demand by nefariously...providing a product consumers want?? In a capitalist society????
