To understand why I adored Dolly so much, you need to experience the life of a Gen X kid growing up in the 70s and 80s in a rural country music redneck homophobic ultra-religious area and knowing Dolly was the only person who had your back as a gay man within that culture.

I loved how so many posts about Dolly Parton were about the good, kind things she’d done. So, I’ve grabbed a stack of kids’ books I bought for projects and I’m gonna drop them at my local Primary School. It’s not much, but it's something. 🙂 Sharing if anyone wants to do the same. 👍 #edusky #UKEd

Cried a little walking around Barnes & Noble thinking about what it would have meant to see so, so, so many covers featuring same sex couples when I was younger.

Why are books with war, violence, murder, betrayal, manipulation and torture seen in 'clean' and 'acceptable' circles, while books with love are hated? Love, compassion, empathy and loyalty are some of the greatest gifts we have as humans. To diminish them as something to judge is nonsensical to me.

We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.
