Just an Italian nerd who spends too much time searching for his country's tornadoes - Part of PRETEMP
It's landspout season in southern Italy! Yesterday we got one in the Lecce province of Apulia (video frame from Nadia Bispini) and today another one in the far southern Foggia province seen from Lavello, across the regional border in Basilicata (video frame from MeteoLavello)
It’s now official: June–July 2026 was the most anomalously warm two-month period ever recorded in France by a staggering margin. France is now virtually certain to record its warmest summer on record.
Hello everyone, I'm not dead! I was just busy with university exams and the relentless sequence of (extremely) severe storms we've been having in the last two weeks or so. In fact, we've been "spamming" the ESWD with reports for days now, this is the map since 15 July until now, and only for N Italy
Yesterday big severe weather day in Italy: very large to almost-giant hail and widespread damaging winds up to 137 km/h. And a very likely small tornado as well, which tossed a parked car onto tables for some kind of event in the Bergamo province. Three injuries as well in total are known
Drought conditions across Western Europe - the effects of our hot, dry, summer so far These two pics were taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission ~7 weeks apart. The effects of limited rainfall and hot, clear, weather are clearly visible: Much of Western Europe is looking desert-like from space.
Some exciting news today: our new paper has just entered Early Online Release in @ametsoc.org #BAMS! It's everything you want to know about tornado emergencies, including an analysis of POD and FAR, a comparison to recommended VROT and STP thresholds, and more. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...
Photo of the decade AT LEAST
No words. Here is a peak at one of our most incredible drone flights around a #tornado to date near Tulliby Lake, AB. This will likely be one of our last intercepts of the season, thank you so much to everyone for following along! #stormchasing #nature #weather
This season has not been the most active ever, but from time to time it sure has been evil. Hail damage swath from an hailstorm in the Treviso province last Sunday (so one week ago) visibile from the two most recent Sentinel-2 images of the area
OTD in 2015, Italy's most recent violent tornado. A terrible IF4 that split the difference between the Veneto towns of Dolo and Mira while scouring the ground, mangling cars, debarking trees and (partially) destroying buildings. 72 people were injured, one was killed after getting lofted in his car
Yesterday a very likely tornado occurred in the Spigno Saturnia area, in SE Lazio. A long, rapidly rotating funnel was filmed and damage was reported (yet not documented...). Photos by Doria Panella and Vincenzo Furia
New tornado found from the 22/6 event in Russia. Path length: ~6.5 km Max width: ~130 m Location: 58.1934, 60.60287 @thilokuehne.bsky.social @federicopavan.bsky.social
OTD in 1965, one of Italy's worst severe weather days ever. Four strong to violent tornadoes caused massive damage from SE Piedmont to eastern Emilia-Romagna, causing 15 deaths and at least 244 additional injuries while destroying homes and vegetation and throwing cars from roads into fields
Via radar imagery analysis and a damage survey, we've been able to find out that a brief tornado debranched trees in a forest a partially destroyed a faulty house just NE of Mantua. Fortunately the home was empty when it suffered IF2 (BSC - 1A) damage. Debris was also scattered in all directions
Update regarding the confirmed tornadoes at Rossburn, MB and Pelley, SK on June 28. Enough evidence has been gathered for the Rossburn, MB tornado damage to be upgraded from EF2 to low-end EF3 - with a maximum wind of 230 km/h. Full track details are still being analyzed. #MBstorm 1/2
Based on numerous reports / visual evidence, the NTP is confirming at least two tornadoes occurred in eastern SK and western MB this evening. A tornado developed south of Pelly, SK and a tornado also developed south of Rossburn, MB #SKstorm #MBstorm
A few tornadoes have been piling up here in Italy these last two days. This is the latest in Calabria (filmed from inside by Giacomo Bubbo), but one touched down on the Asiago Plateau this morning and one partially destroyed a weakly-built house yesterday night. Hail also has been quite problematic
Was für eine Wasserhose heute über dem Bodensee. 😯 🎥 Unwetter-Freaks
OTD in 1973, a tornado recently rated IF3 struck the town of Fossalta di Portogruaro, Venice province, destroying a few buildings, lofting cars and killing 2 people with an additional 124 injuries. This is one of Italy's most forgotten strong tornadoes
Thank you to John Murphy from County Galway for sending us a fantastic video of the tornado which occurred near Athenry yesterday. We are currently collecting information regarding this event. Note there is no sound on this video.
Supercell thunderstorm rotation about 10-20 minutes before it produced a tornado west of Glencoe, ON earlier today. Rain and some large hail wrapping around the back near end of video. Shown at 2x speed to achieve the level of impressiveness I experienced in real time (IMHO). #ONstorm
Since for once we've been lucky with the Google Earth updates, we can confirm a second IF1 tornado from the Manduria, Apulia, countryside from last 02 December, a bit to the west of the main one (which now has a 10.1 km long path)
June 23rd, 2016: A violent tornado struck Jiangsu Province in China. The massive EF4, which reached an astonishing width of around 2.5 miles, devastated areas in and around Funing. Thousands of masonry homes were damaged or completely destroyed. 98 people were killed.
Significant tornado outbreak north of 55N latitude. Damage rated up to EF2. First F/EF2+ tornado in this region of northwestern Alberta since the 2003 Grimshaw tornado. #ABstorm
Based on results from extensive damage surveys and analysis of visual evidence and radar, the NTP has confirmed that a 6-tornado outbreak occurred on June 15 in northwest Alberta. The highest-rated damage was EF2. No injuries were reported. Details at the NTP blog: uwo.ca/ntp/blog/202... #ABstorm
Impressive before-after comparison shared by Kirill Bakanov on Twitter of the damage produced by the tornado in Russia today. I feel this could get up into violent tornado territory
Impressive tornadic event today in Russia. The tree damage I saw on Twitter - partially visible here as well - is potentially eligible for an IF3 rating (complete debranching + slight debarking), tornado motion in video also very supportive of a strong event
#tornado outbreak is underway in the Ural region of Russia. At least two tornadoes have been reported so far, along with significant damage. Full satellite analysis will likely be done on this event as the areas affected are all densely forested. #WxSky #weather
The path of the gorgeous landspout tornado that occurred near Foggia last Tuesday is actually visible from Sentinel-2 imagery. A 2.5 km long, 30 meters wide path stretching towards the SW without any indicators to impact, so an IFU rating it is!
This is probably my favorite Fujita-analyzed tornado, such a groundbreaking work made based on this specific event
June 20th, 1957: A devastating F5 struck Fargo, North Dakota, as part of a tornado family. The twister was widely documented due to the highly populated area that was impacted. Hundreds of homes and other structures were destroyed, and at least 10 people were killed. 1/2
Based on visual evidence, damage reports and radar, the NTP is confirming that there were at least 2 tornado tornadoes in NW AB last evening - at least one affecting Girouxville / Enilda, and another near Nampa / Harmon Valley. An NTP damage survey team is on the way to the affected areas. #ABstorm
Based on numerous reports / visual evidence, the NTP is confirming that at least one tornado occurred in the Peace River area in northwestern Alberta last evening. There are multiple reports of damage that appear to be associated with the tornado. An NTP damage survey team will be deployed #ABstorm.
