The alternative wasn't ideal either. I worked in a district that reopened August 2020 (hybrid/alternating). The fear/stress was intense, with kids and teachers constantly pulled for exposure, and policy/guidelines changed weekly through the fall and again with spring statewide testing.

the big complaint generally revolves around schools, but the timeline there was pretty sensible: most schools were fully remote until the vaccine rollout, after which they fairly quickly moved to in-person learning.

Think about how ridiculous it is that Google backed away from this so quickly, acting like it's something they had no idea would happen. Google. The company that has EVERYONE'S entire search history for the last 20 years. The company that knows EVERYTHING people do online better than any other.
