If your winning issue is trans women in sports, and you're struggling to uncover trans women in any league that anybody has ever heard of, then how do you keep trans athletes at the top of people's minds? Answer: You invent them. defector.com/the-right-ha...

The alternative wasn't ideal either. I worked in a district that reopened August 2020 (hybrid/alternating). The fear/stress was intense, with kids and teachers constantly pulled for exposure, and policy/guidelines changed weekly through the fall and again with spring statewide testing.
the big complaint generally revolves around schools, but the timeline there was pretty sensible: most schools were fully remote until the vaccine rollout, after which they fairly quickly moved to in-person learning.
We'd better raise an Aaron Swartz statue when this is over.
I don’t remember who/what convinced me to add The Fall (2006) to my watchlist, but I’m very thankful.

Feeling a tad petulant as I work on my fourth to last final ever that it has me adding items to my already monstrous reading list. This is probably as it should be---I picked a topic close to my ongoing research after all---but it's truly spoiling the checklist moment.
Large language models, used these days primarily to produce synthetic text, are a scourge on our information ecosystem. The role of the ACM and other scholarly organizations is to curate and produce and archive scholarly work. >>
Fun fact about bisexuality: at numerous points in history (and at least once a generation since 1850 or so), it gets “discovered” as the “new, futuristic” mode of sexuality/relationship! Look up press coverage of famous bis from Ma Rainey (1920s) to David Bowie (1970s) making this claim.
on this day in 1995, scientists discovered bisexuality. happy 31st birthday to all my fellow bs

After hours of lightning talks the last week, I'm saddened by the number of librarians approaching GenAI from a consumer perspective rather than as information specialists. The field is constantly trying to make these services more closely resemble our notions of what AI should be.
If you think the practice of politics does not include the deliberate shifting of public opinion, you just don't understand the game that's being played. It's like saying basketball players should stop trying to get those stupid rebounds and focus on the only important part, scoring.
Literacy is not an individual skill. Literacy is a public infrastructure.
According to the most rigorous studies, 10.8% of college men perpetrate at least one rape before graduation. This statistic always comes to mind when I see men in power reacting with disgust to the idea that one of their peers could face even a shred of accountability.
I don’t think "Dem HR ladies" is labor coded or working class aligned. It comes from the same place everything that is terrible in the last two years has come from. The backlash to the Me Too and Black Lives Matter movements.

I can't wait to install the driver, she thought as she ordered the new scanner. She wondered how many startup apps it would auto-install. Would there be a branded one whose function was mysterious and imperceptible?
I'd love to read a paper on how media flips from the "quoting the press release" phase to the "now's the time to ask these important questions" phase.
