The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

The Diarrhea Lettuce Company Has Been Linked to Forced Labor

The lettuce-producing Taylor Farms was linked to the widespread use of prison labor before its involvement in a cyclospora outbreak.

Here's my interview with CNBC on how Zuckerberg's vacuous talking points about AGI and open source exist to distract from how Meta burned $180bn in capex (and more off-balance-sheet) to make also-ran LLMs that don't deliver an iota of the promise of "personal superintelligence."

@ecoportal.bsky.social 🇨🇱 A Chilean #salmon farm now draws about 57% of its power from #panels laid over the water, cutting roughly 136,000 litres of diesel a year and silencing the generators. With the noise gone, thousands of salmon have gathered in the shade beneath the arrays.🐟

An island in Chile covered its waters with floating solar farm and soon, thousands of salmon had turned them into their home

I'm old enough to remember when polio put my friends into iron lungs. We dutifully lined up at school to get vaccinated. We eradicated the disease. We protected the common good and saved lives. What RFK Jr. is doing to public health in America is a disgrace.

David Barton is a fake historian who wrote a book on Thomas Jefferson that was so inaccurate his publisher was forced to pull it from the shelves. Now Barton, and his son Tim, are advising Trump on his anti-Smithsonian crusade.

The epistemic crisis will be experienced as a series of short form videos of natiral disasters viewing on your phone until you are/aren't in one and a procedurally generated lie makes it impossible for people observing from afar to trust if the peril is real or hallucinated.

Gallup officials say AI news outlet Prism McKinley County is publishing false and misleading stories during historic flooding.

So, what happens if I'm a parent and I know that my kid needs highly paid teachers, a library full of books with diverse characters, trans-inclusive bathrooms and extracurriculars, and a curriculum unpacking topics like systemic racism, colonial oppression, economic inequality, and climate change?

Facebook post from the U.S. Department of Education, saying "Parents know best" with a picture of a cartoon White, two-parent, heteronormative family, featuring a dad in a tie and sweater vest and a mom in a dress and pearls.

Donald Trump has not been asked about E Jean Carroll since a judge called him a rapist. If you want to know why, just look at all the pictures and videos of the White House correspondents laughing it up with Trump’s staff.

For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town.

“Soaring electric vehicle uptake is materially reducing Australia’s petrol demand, as experts forecast the ongoing global oil crisis could put enough clean cars on the road to leave the country less exposed to future fuel shortages.” www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...

Soaring EV sales to shield Australia from fuel shortages

With no end in sight to the war in the Middle East or Iran’s blockade on oil exports, Australia’s growing appetite for electric vehicles is a silver lining to the global energy crisis.

Unusually for bsky, this has attracted a lot of folks who want to argue (via QTs here and downthread) that the anthropomorphizing language is just fine, actually. Helps people understand clearly. Doesn't obfuscate responsibility. And/or is a more accurate portrayal of what the models are doing. >>

This is laughable --- "reporting says", well yes, these reporters did a bang-up job anthropomorphizing the system they are talking about, and obfuscating the responsibility that OpenAI holds here. bsky.app/profile/mims... Some examples:

Marco Rubio is against birthright citizenship. But Marco Rubio *is* a birthright citizen. Ted Cruz is against birthright citizenship. But Ted Cruz was born in Canada. He only got US citizenship by a birthright citizenship law because of his US mother. They are both shameless hypocrites.
