For the record: the paleo-atmospheric stuff is exciting mostly because of forces better understanding of the proposed direct measurements and proxies. There is a very high chance that that kind of work will open up *entirely new* avenues of research that we'd currently not expect to be viable.

We killed whales for oil. Humans have always been afraid of the dark and we found whale oil could be used in oil lamps, street lamps, high grade candles, etc. The main reason we stopped hunting whales is because we discovered petroleum and rock oil and the oil industry kicked off.

One time I won a big fossil fish plate at an auction at an association dinner. After winning it I realized it’d cost more to ship it than it’s worth. So I tipped it to the bartender at the event. He was very excited.
