"Students relying on [AI tutors] may underperform when access to AI is subsequently removed, indicating reduced skill acquisition. [But] carefully designed safeguards, espec'lly asking the AI tutor to provide teacher-designed hints instead of giving away answers, can mitigate these negative effects"

Again, we all had the hunch, but love how this demonstrates that the act of tutoring can mitigate AI harm to cognitive practice. Trick is, how to get the students to use a modified, limited software? www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

“NSF has now pulled back $300 million from two of its divisions: mathematics and physical sciences, and computer and information science and engineering. Programme officers…at the NSF, have pulled back 150 proposals that have already passed peer review to free up the money”

White House science policy captured headlines this week, with the announcement of awards for its flagship AI program, Congressional hearings, and a Vannevar Bush-esque report "Science: A New Golden Age." We fashioned the news into one big story—incl. key updates at NSF. Reported w/ Kaia Glickman:

We’ve seen so much cruelty from ICE over the past year. But using kids as “bait” to arrest & detain their relatives is a new level of evil. I witnessed it last week at 201 Varick Street. Per this article in the Texas Tribune, it’s happened over 100X. (1/3)

ICE arresting relatives trying to take custody of migrant kids

Attorneys say the federal agencies are using children as “bait” to detain sponsors, leaving kids waiting in shelters for months.

Actual faculty getting silenced and fired for their work from the right, and the big issue for a whole bunch of the commentariat is whether there is political discrimination against imagined faculty.

The beautiful game. The people’s game. Throughout this World Cup, we have been reminded of a simple truth: football belongs to everyone. So does the joy and community it creates. Yesterday, I joined New Yorkers on Rikers Island to watch England take on Argentina.

Mayor Mamdani greets detainees in Rikers Island jail for a World Cup watch party. A detainee on Rikers Island is served from a buffet.

ICE’s Camp East Montana is a hellhole. It’s been open less than a year and three people have died there, including the first-ever homicide in ICE detention (allegedly at the hands of guards). Both DHS and Congressional watchdogs have documented extensive problems. Shut it down!

The 84-page report issued jointly Wednesday by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union also says men and women held at Camp East Montana, located at the U.S. Army's Fort Bliss in El Paso, recounted being denied necessary medical care, forced to live in filthy conditions and fed inedible meals. Detainees also said they were prevented from contacting their lawyers or family members.
Of the 71 detainees contacted over a five month period, 64 - about 90% of those interviewed - said they had either personally been assaulted by the staff or had seen others physically abused, according to the report.

Ninety percent of the 71 detainees contacted in the concentration camp on Fort Bliss say they were beaten by guards are witnessed beatings, in addition to inedible meals and lack of access to medication or lawyers.

Excellent post from @pamherd.bsky.social and @donmoyn.bsky.social on NYC’s new PIT Crews—and on what becomes possible when technology serves inclusive, democratic policy aims like affordability, rather than becoming the aim itself. Rooting for the PIT Crews!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social · 3w ago

New w @pamherd.bsky.social: Mamdani just announced PIT Crew — an NYC tech unit that will build digital public products. Takeaway: Mamdani is reclaiming a vision of tech in govt for progressives, one not driven by consultants and which solves real problems. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/mamdani-in...

This was the point all along. To insist that everyone fits neatly into a pink or blue box, so that it's easier to justify treating the whole pink box as less deserving of rights and opportunities and dignities than the blue.

My god. The Heritage Foundation, which mercilessly attacked transgender kids in order to protect the "integrity of women's sports," is now attacking the legal basis for women's sports. The transgender student decision is barely 2 weeks old.

The best story ICE could make up, after 12 hours, is that ICE agents shot someone in the head because they believed the person they shot, who was not accused of any crime, was a different person also not accused of any crime, and so "public safety" required killing them on the spot.

Bill Grueskin@bgrueskin.bsky.social · 3w ago

It took DHS 12 hours to come up with this statement, And the best they could come up with is that ICE shot and killed an unarmed man who didn’t present a threat to the agents. They know they fucked this one up. And it’ll be up to state and local prosecutors—not the feds—to make the case

new paper: we update risk estimates for child welfare system outcomes (investigation, confirmed, foster care, termination of rights) by race/ethnicity using 2016-2023 data. Black and AIAN kids still most likely to have system contact, but rates are down across the board compared to mid 2010s

A two panel plot showing estimates of lifetime risks of investigation and confirmed maltreatment for seven racial and ethnic groups. There is a slight downward trend over timeA two panel plot showing risk estimates for foster care and termination of parental rights. Foster care rates have a noticeable downward slope. Termination rates have a smaller negative change over time.

ICE has killed again. Again, the govt scrambled to claim an officer was threatened by ICE’s victim’s car. And again, that appears to be a lie. Except this time ICE also grabbed 3 witnesses, and is trying to get them out of the country. Immoral, authoritarian, and practically an admission of guilt.

NEWS --> Three men who were in the van with the victim of the ICE shooting in Texas are potential witnesses, but they're now under pressure to self-deport, a rep for the families tells me. They remain in detention even as ICE's story falters. Details in this piece: newrepublic.com/article/2129...
