I am a member of an international editorial board of a regionally oriented journal, the flagship journal for the region. We had a board meeting and the journal editor shared the latest numbers: 70% desk rejects due to #AI at a submission rate of over 1000 articles p.a. Countless hours of extra work.

I think the thing crushing my spirit at the moment (it rotates, but there's always something!) is just the utter selfishness that the AI debate is bringing out in so many people. But I guess that's why it's the big Silicon Valley/GOP play. They know we love being selfish.

"It’s no surprise that 76% of teachers are using #AI tools . . . [also] for marking even creative subjects" Unclear where this number is from but: creativity is not the (only) boundary of AI. It's the ability for critique. It's the ability to be bored, inspiered, to joke.

Students rebel against AI Students at Barton School oppose AI as it risks replacing human teachers, especially in creative subjects, ethics and wellbeing | Oscar Dunning @sussexbylines.co.uk

Best practice! Also for University: My students are also banned from submitting assignments that rely on #AI. But they don't fail the assignment either, because assignments no longer count in terms of grades but in terms of what students want to get out of them. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I met an absolutely lovely academic who asked whether my department back home is affected by ICE -- a question dramatizing how little info is getting out. For the record, the small example I chose: My dept has a carpool to pick up grad students of color who can't safely commute to campus alone.

AI optimists please help me understand this: If Claude is good at python coding because it devoured Substack, and Substack is now disappearing because of Claude.. how does Claude get good at the next programming language when Substack no longer exists?
