We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!

With academic jobs few and far between, the NSF is testing a new approach to graduate education: Giving Ph.D. students industry experience — and dollars — as part of their training. For more, see my latest for @statnews.com. www.statnews.com/2026/07/29/h...

I’m looking for recommendations for the best breakfast sandwiches in the ENTIRE Bay Area. Send me your favorites, either here or to grant.marek@sfgate.com. Will do my best to track the journey here, starting with Bay Area breakfast sandwich #1: Verve’s Breakfast Sandwich in Palo Alto. It is good.

Can we program a kinase like a switch? Inspired by natural autoinhibitory complexes, we designed miniproteins against active- and inactive-like conformations of Focal Adhesion Kinase. Depending on the targeted state, the resulting binders either activated or inhibited the kinase.

🙋🏾‍♀️I am honored to have been supported by @hypothesisfund.bsky.social and can attest that they intentionally select their awardees. There is incredible representation at the scout level as well. Have nothing but good things to say about HF leadership - there is always improvement but the bar is high!

8/ Wildly heterogeneous. Mitochondria inside the same cell are far from chemically equivalent. In HeLa cells, most mitochondria contain only ~1–2 mM Na⁺. But a small subset carries much higher levels. Within one cell, neighboring mitochondria can live in very different ionic worlds.

A cell showing mitochondrial Na+ maps at single organelle resolution. One sees "noodles" of different lengths and differently colored according to Na+ levels.Bild
