How can an individual be “polarized”? An individual can be “radicalized”. Anyway, most “polarization” literature is about right-wing radicalization. Stop using the term “polarization” for radicalization on one pole!
Such a missed opportunity for the EU and its (richer) member states. Both the UK and the US are weakening their university systems and there is a unique opportunity to use some of their top talent to lift up EUropean universities. Instead, they defund their core and add a few shiny stars.

Years ago, John Mortimer playfully dismissed the prospect of global warming with reference to the probability of southern England developing a climate akin to Tuscany (with associated benefits such as vineyards etc). He didn’t pause to reflect on what might happen to *actual* Tuscany. Same here.

Yes. This point is not sufficiently recognized in the global imbalances debate. If you think your CA deficit is excessive and caused by factors outside your borders, you should tax or otherwise discourage capital inflows. Tariffs are a very blunt tool at best. +
Michael Pettis@michaelpettis.bsky.social · 2mo ago8/9 I agree, and this suggests that rather than encourage capital inflows, economies that want to strengthen their manufacturing and productive sectors and to benefit workers by raising productivity and wages should consider capital controls as a far more effective tool than tariffs.
