Earlier this week, Aala Abdullahi and I published a story about the impact of rapid transfers on people that ICE has locked away in detention facilities. www.themarshallproject.org/2026/06/01/i...
ICE Detained Them, and Then They Vanished
Under Trump, the U.S. increasingly sends immigrants all over the nation with little warning, leaving families and attorneys unsure where they are.

One dimension of the active resistance around the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility is that so many of the people detained there are from the region around the facility. This table is from @austinkocher.com's analysis of data describing people detained at that facility.

After a few weeks delay, ICE just released new detention statistics. They show 70,766 people in detention as of 1/26/2026. I believe this is the first time this data source has reported a detained population over 70k.
It's near-white out conditions in Chicago as the snow comes down, and tonight's anti-ICE/CBP rally is wrapping up in front of city hall. But not before the crowd bounces and chants, "I believe that we will win!"
A massive, blocks-long march protesting immigration enforcement and broader anti-immigrant policies heads away from its start at the Federal Building in Tucson, Arizona.

BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps. This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

One of my biggest takeaways from reporting this story was how much media reports in the aftermath of police shootings, in particular with the police union spokesperson putting forward a narrative of an incident, were then used as key pieces of evidence for a future investigation.
Shaping narratives when police shoot and kill someone has been a fundamental part of how police and their supporters operate. For example, see this @yanak.bsky.social @samstecklow.bsky.social story about the Chicago Police Department from 2016: chicagoreader.com/news/how-chi...

two major mayoral elections in 4 days (yes it never ends): Miami, which Democrats are trying to flip. Albuquerque, which the GOP is trying to flip.
The Democratic mayor of Albuquerque, Tim Keller, faces a runoff next week against a former Republican sheriff, Darren White. White has pledged to repeal an executive order from Keller that limits local collaboration with ICE.

Broadview provides an example of how ICE custody does not equal ICE detention. People held by ICE in hold rooms, hospitals, or hotels are not counted as officially "detained" when it comes to the stats reporting.
I did not expect the Broadview facility in suburban Chicago to appear on this list. And it didn't. ICE considers these kinds of places as "office locations" or "processing centers", which means Broadview is not an "authorized facility" by the agency's definition. www.dhs.gov/news/2025/11...
ICE just published its detention statistics spreadsheet. The first of the 2026 fiscal year and the first since mid-September, before the shutdown. The data shows 65,135 people in detention, the highest I've seen in this particular data.
