We taught Miles how to ride a bike today. We also had to deal with an old man mad that we had them practicing in a school parking lot while he drove his monster truck. Once again, kids exist and have a right to take up space. Also, get rid of those damn monster trucks. None of you need that.

Let's talk about mayors - a 🧵 Burnham wants to give mayors across the country substantially more powers, money and responsibility. He's looking to roll out "Greater Manchester Plus" (my phrase) across England within three years. That's very fast, and very good. It needs to be done. 1/X

#NZpol In light of this title, I'd also recommend a wander through "The Commercialisation of New Zealand" by Brian Easton. And, this from by historian Tony Simpson - commenting on the result of the first real salvo of Free Market absolutists (cheers Roger 🤬). Unfortunately nothing's changed much.

"Democracy in NZ had been limited... and redefined. Some individuals in the Corporate Business Sector have been considerably empowered by the events of the last 10 years, but I'd guess 90% of the population of NZ has been thoroughly disempowered compared to the influence and effect they could have on the economy in terms of the influence and power they had over their daily lives compared to previous decades. Some of the options used may or may not be any longer available for one reason or another - but many of them still are, and we've simply abandoned them for ideological reasons. One of the consequences of that has been the thorough inter-penetration of the NZ Economy by large trans-national Corporations. Many NZers will find as a result of that, of course, is that it will become increasingly difficult to achieve their social ambitions, because they will have no means of controlling those orgs, and those orgs of course have no interest in the social infrastructure of NZ..."

I reread this 1998 book yesterday. We have never recovered from Rogernomics and Ruthanasia, but now we're getting another dose, with Māori bashing as an extra.

After 17 and a half years today is my last day working in the NHS. I've worked under 12 Health secretaries. Every single one made it harder for us to look after patients and pursued an agenda of privatisation and outsourcing. The NHS thrives in spite of, not because of it’s political leadership.

If a company proposes making stainless steel car be wary. Stainless steel is a daft choice for car bodies. It's expensive, hard to stamp, changes colour in welding & is difficult to paint or repair. Actual car designers know this. Stainless steel shows that the person in charge won't take advice.
