I had to code and pronounce a time of death on a respiratory therapist colleague. There's a memorial plaque for her outside the emergency department to this day. I wrote and re-wrote my will. I will never forgive these ghouls trying to rewrite history and deny our experience.

RFK Jr said these words today on national television "There were ICUs that were empty all over the country including in New York at the height (of the pandemic)" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha You are a fucking idiot hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha <sobs silently>

The New England Journal of Medicine invites applications from physicians at any career stage for a one-year, full-time, paid editorial fellowship beginning in July 2027. Applications are due by Saturday, August 15, 2026. Learn more: https://nej.md/3cCQajB

Harleen K. Marwah, M.D., 2024-2025 NEJM editorial fellow, is smiling and sitting in front of a microphone, against a background of acoustic panels. A quote from Dr. Marwah is displayed: "I've learned so much from the diverse perspectives that everyone brings to the table. And it's definitely going to make me both a better physician and a better researcher moving forward."

Most-recent common ancestor of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease was about 60,000 years ago, well before there were people in the Americas. I don't think the chipmunks were doing gain-of-function experiments. Figure 3 from Walter et al. (2017): doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Phylogeny (i.e., inferred evolutionary tree) of the spirochete bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

Dated phylogeny of B. burgdorferi in North America. MCC tree of
the best-fitting model inferred with BEAST (relaxed log-normal molecular clock model; Bayesian skyline population size). Tips are coloured by sampling region. Evidence of ancient midwestern ancestry (the oldest internal node in each clade with support for ancestral location in the midwest) is labelled ‘MW’. Branch lengths are in years bp. Blue bars at each interior node represent 95% credible intervals of estimated node age. Branches are labelled with posterior probability values (not shown for shallow nodes for clarity).

RFK told Dana Bash that Lyme disease “almost certainly” came from gain of function research. Which is utterly false. www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdi...

“Musk spends … his free time fomenting violence and spreading the same hateful ideology that motivated some of the deadliest shootings & attacks ever to happen on American soil. It is that fact, & not the cars he builds or the rockets he launches, that ought to define his place in public life.” 👏👏👏

"If there is a question to ask, then, it is this: Why does Musk get a pass? Why do politicians, journalists and commentators treat his far-right racist radicalism as a sideshow rather than the core of his political, ideological and industrial project..." www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/o...

Utterly disappointing to see a scientist complaining about having to deal with AI slop in their own field last week and then just happily posting AI slop this week because it's some "funny picture" that was generated.

A grim reminder this 4th of July: The US has the highest incarceration rate of any independent democracy on Earth, making it a leader in mass incarceration. Far too many people are locked up in the “land of the free.”

Graph showing that the U.S. incarcerates people at a rate of 614 per 100,000. This is at least 4x higher than any other founding NATO countries.

Exciting news! After a wonderful four years at @uni-jena.de, I'm excited to announce the next chapter as a group leader at @fzborstel.bsky.social and professor at @uni-kiel.de.
