🌙 Our new preprint is out! We present Nyx, an open-source unsupervised framework for sleep scoring across species, lifespan and modalities. Validated on 19 datasets and 8,000 hours of sleep, from mice to humans, lizards and birds, across development, ageing, health and disease.

🥳Our review of intracranial EEG research on the neural correlates of consciousness is out in eLife: elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre...! We think these methods offer a unique window on consciousness!🧠 A thread 👇

New preprint! We show low arousal states promote hippocampal ripple genesis in sleep and wake. This bridges rodent work, where ripples predominate during sleep, with human studies reporting ripples during active behavior, identifying low arousal as a common mechanism www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Arousal state modulates human hippocampal ripples

Hippocampal ripples are transient, high-frequency oscillations linked to memory replay and consolidation. Ripples are well-characterized in rodents to occur during periods of behavioral inactivity (i....

New paper from our group: using simultaneous EEG-fMRI, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying individual NREM sleep slow waves. Our findings suggest that slow waves are not a homogeneous phenomenon and may reflect distinct physiological processes. www.nature.com/articles/s42...

Thalamic involvement defines distinct slow-wave subtypes in NREM sleep - Communications Biology

Using simultaneous EEG-fMRI, we identify two types of NREM slow waves with distinct thalamic profiles. Large, synchronized waves involve early thalamic activation and arousal markers, whereas smaller ...

Massive study in @nature.com, converges with our past study of 750,000 people (Sea hero quest) to show u-shape curves for the impact of sleep. We studied cognition, here its disease impact: Sleep chart of biological ageing clocks in middle and late life www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Sleep chart of biological ageing clocks in middle and late life - Nature

A cross-organ, multi-omics U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and biological ageing clocks highlights the potential of sleep optimization to promote healthy ageing, lower disease risk and ex...

🧠💤 New paper out in @plosbiology.org! Together with Adriana Michalak (@dr-adri.bsky.social), Davide Marzoli, Francesco Pietrogiacomi et al., we show that dreaming, especially immersive dreaming, plays a key role in how deep sleep feels. 🔗 doi.org/10.1371/jour... @erc.europa.eu #ERC-StG #sleep
