Poet and nuisance. A bit autistic. New book, camping underground, is a fun post-apocalyptic verse novel with Puncher & Wattmann.

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

It's crucial to understand that Joyce & Hanson are deeply corrupt grifters exploiting the country's worst instincts with "policies" that will drastically worsen their followers' lives, and don't make sense even on a superficial level. Treating any of this with reverence is doing their work for them.

Really feel sympathy for these people suffering from so much economic anxiety and cost of living pressures that they want to seize the homes of brown people Important not to mock them but respect their views and meet them where they are www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

‘James Schuyler once told an interviewer that he didn’t write the kind of poetry that attracted critics. “It’s too easy,” he added. It wasn’t easy, though, to arrive at his kind of ease. He’d sometimes spend up to a year tinkering with a poem.’ Matthew Bevis: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Will Self is currently writing one of the best regular politics and culture columns you’re likely to read, and for reasons that remain a mystery doing so exclusively on Facebook and X. This week he has weighed in on the AI writing crisis, and his thoughts are typically piercing and brilliant.

The web has become a realm of disavowal. Human beings enter it in order not to become more fully themselves but less so. They use it to evade embodiment, evade continuity, evade consequence. That literary institutions proved so permeable to this environment demonstrates not merely incompetence but philosophical exhaustion. Publishing ceased to believe sufficiently in literature to defend the conditions under which literature remains possible. To write with genuine style requires embodiment plus all the linguistic capacities already approximated statistically by the machine. It requires the encoding of lived temporality into symbolic form capable of being… [tea break]…reanimated by another embodied consciousness at a later historical moment. Once one understands the complexity of this operation, one also understands how fragile literary civilisation truly is.The scale of the crisis is therefore monumental. The Granta affair is not simply an embarrassing editorial oversight. It is the first genuinely literary manifestation of a much larger civilisational fracture: institutions charged with preserving style can no longer reliably recognise it.

It's kind of fascinatingly and depressingly hypocritical for Deborah Conway to claim that opposing a political movement is genocidal while the logical conclusion, currently underway, of that political movement is a genocide.

If you're thinking about using gen-AI to "write" books, this 🧵 is for you. I’m a highly experienced editor who’s been in the biz a long time. Recently I’ve had manuscripts come to me where the author has used gen-AI – not for writing, I’ve been assured, but for “structuring” or "organising"
