Me when the spellcheck in Word keeps giving me wrong suggestions:
I really hate the “I don’t owe anyone anything” mentality because we actually owe each other and this planet a lot. You don’t have to be selfless all the time or burn yourself out but you should be kind and helpful and compassionate to the best of your ability. We need to care about each other more
Ten years today since @adapalmer.bsky.social's Too Like the Lightning came out! Still my favourite series of the twenty-first century so far.
The most preposterous part about this to me is that I (and I imagine most of ESL writers/readers) specifically IMPROVED their language skills through looking up words they didn't recognize. My teacher granted me access to her library because she knew it was the best way to learn!
I've been getting direct correspondence from readers telling me I should not use unfamiliar-to-them words since my first novel came out in 2018. They usually act like they're doing me a favour by letting me know I've screwed up (by forcing a reader to the dictionary) so I can do better next time.
For a fiction author there can be no glory so great, no award so gleaming, no praise that so warms the heart, as unsolicited fan art
After seven weeks of working on my newest project and 81k worth of words, I have a finished first draft. 😭 Personal record broken. Now what do I do with my life?
not sure how to end your novel? just stop writing
As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.
Please do not try to clock “balanced list of threes” as an AI tell because that’s been classic rhetorical structure for going on three millennia and it’s baked into all our writing now, I‘m begging people to read more old things
I'm watching the new Young Sherlock series and I haven't seen such blatant homoeroticism between two leads that weren't in an actual gay show since BBC's Merlin. 😂 I'm having a great time.
Lots of tech dudes think the "idea" is the important part of creating, not the creative journey you take through work to give that idea actual meaning. Ideas are the easiest, cheapest and least fulfilling part of it. Giving ideas life through work, and sharing that work with others, is the stuff.
Seriously it’s like there is a giant chunk of tech people who don’t understand that when you’ve learned how to write, you feel proud, you look forward to doing more of it, you cheerfully neglect your other work just so you can write more
Thrilled to announce that my short story "For Limited Appearances" will appear in Flame Tree Press' new Folklore Horror anthology! Loosely based on Northern Greece's carnival traditions, I'm so excited to share modern folklore for a change, especially with a story so close to my heart.

The most depressing part about job-hunting currently is having to keep removing all the AI training jobs that keep popping up in my searches.
see? here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared
They said it would take 193 years to clean London’s air. We did it in nine. 💨 London has now met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide air pollution.
the fact that none of my friends have sent me this in the 2h it's been live is a betrayal i'll never get over

Reading Martha Wells's Network Effect, and the line "I had read things that had made me consider other possibilities" has me choking up. Reading--reading anything, fiction or scientific data or social media posts--shows us other possible ways of being. It gives us permission to reshape our lives.

📣 New novel announcement: ANNA DREAMS OF A DEAD REVOLUTIONARY is coming from @tinhouse.bsky.social in 2028. When people ask what it's about, I say it's like SOUR CHERRY, except the haunted house is Greece, and Bluebeard is fascism. 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈✊ Keep writing your queer, trans, antifascist books, friends.
ICYMI my flash fic about a... peculiar space cult is now out on Manawaker Studio's Flash Fiction Podcast. You can listen to it on the links below! 🌌🚀

Bisexuals! Get visible! It’s bisexual visibility day!
I will never forget how the fully fictional “concerns” of TERFs and billionaires about trans people have contributed to the rapid rise of fascism. There they are, egging it on, not listening to science, history, medicine, and individual experience, fiddling their own prejudices while society burns.
The Deep Ones - I’ve been always thinking about a deep sea Cephalopod theme and here it is! Tentacles and appendages are so different when it comes to arranging the composition so it took me a good while, and hopefully it ends up well! 🦑🐙They’re just like from another world💙
do people realize that when they're like "I only used AI for grammar/whatever" you kinda throw literally everything you ever say, do, or make into question? like... how can I ever trust whatever you turn in or produce to not have AI shit in it? like once you break bad, I can't trust your ass again
