new york is older than boston and philly and had at least the same amount of historic stuff happen in the colonial era if not more. odd how in school i only ever learned (ad nauseam) about colonial stuff that happened in the other two cities.

when my wife and i are watching reacher, we often talk to reacher, for example "go reacher go!" and "that's right, reacher!" and "mess those guys up, reacher!"
Every reporter who was on board Air Force One when Trump abandoned it as a decoy to be attacked knows exactly which administration staffers were also left as sitting ducks there. There's a real opportunity here to get some inside dirt from people who have every right to be bitter and spiteful.
STUNNING: Trump left the White House press corps in Turkey as a decoy to be attacked by Iran—and instead flew out on a secret plane: wapo.st/4i1OByh
weirdly fascinated by how if he tries gordon ramsay can pronounce any word in two syllables - restaurant, masterchef, terrific -> rst-rnt, mast-tchf, trrfic
fiona apple theme song to the show "lucky" is terrific. instantly unforgettable ohrwurm
i don't know what i expected from a matcha yuzu krispy kreme, but it was a... subtler experience than i was ready for. i can now say i have tasted a bitter doughnut.
Until 1933, German universities led the world. They have never regained that position.
If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of our future innovation capacity, prosperity, and national security crumbling. Shattering our university research system and international student pipeline will harm all Conservative & Liberal Americans. From the American Institute of Physics—>
both by nature and upbringing, i don't think i really noticed or understood that the world revolves around giving people little gifts and frequent small talk until i was... 40? i think it took a book about primate social grooming plus persona games for me to even start getting it
i once went to the bathroom in a bar in munich, came out, & everyone was staring silently at the tv. i asked a waitress what was up. "they chose the new pope, and he is german." "congratulations!!!" - she gave me a look i can't describe. only learned later he was in the hitler youth etc.
I am at Waffle House at 11pm and three teenagers in the next booth are discussing the Pope. GIRL1: So the pope— GIRL2: Which pope? GIRL1: Pope Leo. DUDE: What about Francis? GIRL1: He died. DUDE: THE POPE DIED?!? GIRL1: Like last year! We have an American Pope! DUDE: They can DO that?!
They were too stupid to understand the source of American hegemony and memed each other into thinking they lived in a failed state because there wasn't enough bravado in our imperialism. Took less than a year to wreck the whole edifice. Incredible
the reactionaries sort of thought you could just thrust your chest out and slap a bunch of paint and memes on things and recover national pride and a lost era of white male triumph or whatever. how's your national pride now. are you proud yet. are you feeling strong
more baptists like this guy from the early 1800s please
i liked disclosure day. it's not really spielberg's fault that its central concept (that any information, any at all, could be successfully "disclosed" on a particular "day" to today's humans) is no longer valid
i don't think the halva was what triggered the AI btw
my bank's AI fraud detection shut off my card because i bought five nintendo games, some halva, and a shingles vaccine in one morning. at least they turned it right on again when i called. must happen constantly
OK, i will only be thinking about donkey kong bananza for at least the next 48-72 hours. thought it was another 2d platformer, but it's as big / deep / addictive as my possibly favorite mario game of all time, super mario 3d world (& i now know a lot of the same developers were involved)

watching disclosure day & hearing obvious john williams music and said "how can this guy keep writing music, he must be 80". he's NINETY FOUR
thought i wasn't jetlagged at all until the second i opened my laptop and tried to do some work, whereupon one eyeball started twitching and my brain floated down through the floor and turned into many many spiders
Judge Wise finds that ICE coerced a 20-year-old Tongan man — admitted legally to the country three years ago — to sign a document accepting deportation, despite no criminal record or immigration proceedings against him. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
wish i had taken a picture, but there's a billboard out by the airport for an osteo surgeon of some kind that just says, in 20-foot letters, THE BONE KING
Too bad we don't have a press corps that can simply find out and report the truth of the matter instead of just telling us what both sides are saying
Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.
Bet you didn't know that the Little Morton Salt Girl is an immortal being who existed before there was life on Earth.
Part of why I wrote the book is I love books about generations of artists and I thought film books are too often individual biographies! So I’m very glad and grateful it reads in that vein.
fireflies can't be seen unless you don't look for them; august after all.
